The Garden of Cosmic Speculation
2Garden of Cosmic Speculation is a private garden
built by Charles Jencks and his wife in Portrack
House, Dumfries, Scotland. Its design was
influenced by Chinese garden philosophy. One of
its main features is long snaking curves and
waves that both satisfied the couples love for
Chinese landscape painting and complemented the
Scottish hills around them
3The garden is comprised of 5 major areas, which
are connected by numerous artificial lakes, large
white staircases, bridges, and zigzag terraces.

6 Garden of Cosmic Speculation The area of the
garden with red spiral bridge is called
HEAVEN-HELL. It is meant to show the
interrelationship between birth and life, good
and evil

8 Garden of Cosmic Speculation The Jumping
Bridge "...jumps over two streams and dives
into the ground. It is made from fractals that
tilt against each other"

10Garden of Cosmic Speculation The Jumping
Bridge Inspired by Chaos Theory, which posits
the strange and often seemingly insignificant
events which trigger massive changes in the
design of things
11Garden of Cosmic Speculation The couple chose
their home, Portrack House, to be the location
for their dream and planned the garden carefully.
They met with scientists and horticulturists, in
order to come up with a design of a landscape,
that would blend nature, science, and art. The
sculptured garden is a representation of an
unconventional approach. Jencks is essentially
working with one duality, order versus chaos. The
both and condition for this duality is
complexity. Jencks describes how a higher
intelligent system is one that has found the
balance between order and chaos. The examples he
gives are a beating heart, the brain, Hamlet, and
poetry. All these elements are hard to truly
duplicate using artificial means. Elements that
are purely ordered or chaotic can be easily
mimicked and derived artificially (through
computation)

The wonderfully named Garden of Cosmic
Speculation at Portrack House (near Dumfries) in
Scotland was created by renowned landscape
architect and theorist Charles Jencks (1939 -
2019) and Maggie Keswick, his wife. This quirky
and unusual garden takes its inspiration largely
from cosmology and mathematics

Starting from the top, in the present day, and
descending down, visitors are experiencing moving
through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution

The steps disappear into the dark water below,
which represents the mystery of the origin of the
universe

CASCADE and the DNA garden
24Garden of Cosmic Speculation - Universe cascade
To Jencks, the dug up earth provided an
opportunity not just to shape the landscape, but
to invent a new grammar of landscape design
inspired by animistic Chineses geomancy
25The garden is open to visitors one day only,
through the Gardens program of Scotland. After
Maggie was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in
1993, the couple founded the network of Maggies
Cancer Caring Centres that has continued to grow
and develop since her death in 1995. The annual
opening of the garden helps raise money for the
Maggies Centres
26There is a 'Universe cascade' where water runs
down and time runs up, in a series of stone steps
that show the history of the Universe. As you
walk up the steps, jumping from platform to
platform, you see the Universe slowly unfolding
from its origins in the mists of the quantum soup

29The Garden of Cosmic Speculation is a landscape
of waves, twists and folds, a landscape pattern
designed to relate us to nature through new
metaphors presented to the senses. Charles
Jencks
Charles Alexander Jencks was an American cultural
theorist, landscape designer, architectural
historian, and co-founder of the Maggies Cancer
Care Centres. He published over thirty books and
became famous in the 1980s as theorist of
Postmodernism. Jencks devoted time to landform
architecture, especially in Scotland. The Garden
of Cosmic Speculation was created by Charles
Jencks at his home, Portrack House, near
Dumfries.
