2023 saw new releases by the Beatles and the
Rolling Stones for the first time in
decades. Bernie Andrews was close to both bands
in their earliest days, and played a significant
part in their rise to fame. BERNIE tells a true
but forgotten tale of music business mayhem,
class division, snobbery and fundamental social
change in the 1960s8220Yo8217llnever guess
who I got a letter from82308230facy Bernie
remembering me!..8221- John Lennon to his
personal manager, Tony King, April 1975, on
receiving a letter from Bernie Andrews almost
ten years after they had last seen each
other.8220Der Bernie, thank you for your kind
letter82308230itbrought a lump to my throat,
of which I do not know8230Signed, Winston
O8217Bogie.82218211from John
Lennon8217sjocular reply to Bernie - April
1975.8220Ho8217smy mate, Bernie?8221- John
Lennon to Radio 1 DJ, Andy Peebles - during his
last ever interview for the BBC at his home in
New York - two days before he was shot to death
on his doorstep on December 8, 1980.8220Wewere
going for an album market which was just starting
to really take off... ..and Bernie Andrews'
radio sessions were far more experimental8230
8230wedid an early version of Whole Lotta Love
for Bernie8217sTop Gear that was just
terrific!8221- Jimmy Page, Led
Zeppelin.8220Th original brief for Bernie's
radio show, Top Gear, was 8216loking beyond the
horizons of pop82178230 8230inolving
nipping down to the London Palladium to interview
the likes of Lulu or Dusty Springfield8230823
0bu when Bernie hired me... ...well, he and I
had a very different project in
mind82308230Pik Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and the
like82308230peple at the time said
8216hocan you play this awful stuff82178230
8230ofcourse the irony is that now they are
pillars of the establishment82308230thse
that have survived.8221- Radio 1 DJ John Peel -
some
4
would say the most controversial, others would
say the most iconic British DJ of the
20th Century.8220An name you mention82308230
th Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix,
Pink Floyd, Queen82308230Evryone!..
8230Benie did so much to help new bands in
their early days. He was a wonderfully, colourful
and eccentric character who helped create our pop
culture. John Peel, myself and other Radio 1
broadcasters fortunate enough to have worked
with Bernie are indebted to him.8221- Annie
Nightingale, who wrote Bernie8217sobituary in
2010. When Bernie worked with Annie in the 1970s,
she was the only female DJ on Radio 1. By the
time of her death in 2023, she had become not
only the longest serving DJ on Radio 1, but also
the longest running female radio presenter in
the world.8220Hefought for what he believed
in82308230Benie was great fun, a great
friend, a great laugh82308230no always easy
to get on with82308230bu always
rewarding.8221- Jeff Griffin,
Bernie8217scolleague and lifelong friend, who
went on to produce the radio and TV soundtrack
for Live Aid at Wembley in 1985.8220Idid enjoy
your honest perspective on various murky aspects
of the music industry as well as being reminded
of some of Bernie8217seccentric traits. Also,
you have absolutely captured Bernie8217sstormy
relationship with his bosses.8221(Bev
Phillips - mixing engineer and co-producer of
many of Bernie8217smost successful productions
from the earliest days of the Beatles and the
Rolling Stones to those of Jimi Hendrix and
Stevie Wonder).8220Ithink the book is great, I
couldn8217tput it down. It works brilliantly
for me. I think it would make a great play/film
in due course. Johnny Depp?!8221(Paddy
Kingsland - mixing engineer on many of
Bernie8217smost adventurous productions in the
early days of Pink Floyd and David Bowie, and
later Producer, Radiophonic Workshop / Dr Who
Music ampFX).The action in
5
Bernie8217sstory takes place at the point of
impact, where the wide boys of the 1960s record
businesscollide with a stuffy BBC Radio pop music
department stuck firmly in the 1940s.
