Introduction
Read this manual carefully to learn how to
operate and service your machine correctly.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury
or equipment damage. This manual should be
considered a permanent part of your machine and
should remain with the machine when you sell
it. Measurements in this manual are U.S.
customary units and their metric
equivalents. Right-hand and left-hand sides of
the implement are determined by facing in the
direction the implement will travel when going
forward.
Warranty is on the warranty certificate which you
should have received from your dealer. Write
product identification numbers in the Specifi-
cations section. Accurately record all the
numbers to help in tracing the machine should it
be stolen. Your dealer also needs these numbers
when you order parts. If this manual is kept on
the machine, also file the identification numbers
in a secure place off the machine.

RECOGNIZE SAFETY INFORMATION This is the
safety-alert symbol. When you see this symbol on
your machine or in this manual, be alert to the
potential for personal injury.
UNDERSTAND SIGNAL WORDS A signal wordDANGER,
WARNING, or CAUTIONis used with the safety-alert
symbol. DANGER identifies the most serious
hazards.
WARNING AIJTI0N AB6TS187 053SIGNAL 07S08'5
Safety signs with signal word DANGER or WARNING
are typically near specific hazards. General
precautions are listed on CAUTION safety signs.
CAUTION also calls attention to safety messages
in this manual.
LEARN MACHINE SAFETY Carefully read this manual.
Learn how to operate the machine and how to use
the controls properly. Do not let anyone operate
this machine without proper instruction. Unauthori
zed modifications to the machine may impair the
function and/or safety and affect machine
life. AB6TS183 053READ2 080785
FOLLOW SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Carefully read all
safety messages in this manual and on your
machine safety signs. Follow recommended
precautions and safe operating practices. Keep
safety signs in good condition. Replace missing
or damaged safety signs.

Safety
INSPECT CUTTER REGULARLY Check for loose
hardware, especially blade and blade holder
hardware. Inspect driveline shield for free
rotation. All safety shields must be in
place. Check condition of hydraulic hoses and
connections.
PROTECT BYSTANDERS Never operate the cutter near
people. Do not stand near the cutter while blades
are in motion. Debris can be thrown hundreds of
feet. Keep all shields in place, including those
on discharge openings at front and rear of
deck. DO NOT allow children to operate tractor
or cutter. Operate the cutter from tractor seat
only. 4EAWST229 WONT45? 9 290187
OPERATE TRACTOR AND CUTTER SAFELY All rotary
cutters are potentially dangerous machines. This
rotary cutter has been designed to minimize the
chance of accidents but there is no substitute
for a careful operator. Flywheel etfect of blade
holder will drive tractors with transmission
driven PTO's forward, even when tractor clutch is
disengaged. Travel slowly near ditches, trees, or
large objects. To stop, slow engine speed and
apply brakes before disengaging clutch. 10-2
13
Safety
CUT SAFELY ON SLOPES Operate up and down, not
across, steep slopes. Avoid sudden starts and
stops. Back tractor up a steep slope with PTO
off. Cut only as you travel down the slope. Slow
down before you change directions on a
slope. 4EAW1l232 Wl,SS I 281086
AVOID TIPPING WHILE CUTTING Watch for holes,
rocks, roots, or other hidden hazards. Keep away
from drop-offs. Do not cut near the edge of a
gully or bank. Before you make a sharp turn, slow
down, especially on a slope.
4EAWz 233 \v 5S J 28 o86
BACK UP SAFELY Do not operate the cutter in
reverse unless necessary. Always look and be
aware of what lies behind the cutter. Be very
careful when you back the tractor with the PTO
engaged. Material can be discharged from the
front of the cutter. This increases risk of
injury to the operator from thrown
objects. 4EAWII23 I W01I4S AC 281086
KEEP RIDERS OFF MACHINE Only allow the operator
on the machine. Keep riders off. Riders on
machine are subject to injury such as being
struck by foreign objects and being thrown off of
the machine. Riders also obstruct the operator's
view resulting in the machine being operated in
an unsafe manner. A86TS S73 053, RID ER 26S

Safety
PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES Be prepared if a fire
starts. Keep a first aid kit and fire
extinguishers handy. Keep emergency numbers for
doctors, ambulance service, hospital, and fire
department near your telephone.
PROTECT AGAINST NOISE

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause
impairment or loss of hearing.

Wear a suitable hearing protective device such as
earmuffs (A) or earplugs (B) to protect against
objectionable or uncomfortable loud noises.
USE ROLL-OVER PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE (ROPS) To help
prevent personal injury or death caused by
tractor roll-over, be sure tractor is equipped
with roll-over protective structure (ROPS) and
use approved seat belt. In addition, add rear
ballast recommended.
USE SEAT BELT PROPERLY Use a seat belt when you
operate with a roll-over protective structure
(ROPS) to minimize chance of injury from an
accident such as an overturn. Do not use a seat
belt if operating without a ROPS.

STAY CLEAR OF PTO Entanglement in rotating
driveline can cause serious injury or death. Keep
tractor master shield and driveline shields in
place at all times except for special
applications as directed in the implement
operator's manual. Wear fairly tight fitting
clothing. Stop the engine and be sure PTO
driveline is stopped before making adjustments,
con- nections, or cleaning out PTO driven
equipment.

USE SAFETY LIGHTS AND DEVICES Use of flashing
warning lights and turn signals are recom- mended
when towing this equipment on public roads unless
prohibited by state or local regulations. An
implement safety lighting kit is available from
your John Deere dealer. Keep safety items in good
condition. Replace missing or damaged
items. ALights VReflector Tape MY Emblem

USE A SAFETY CHAIN A safety chain will help
control drawn equipment (B) should it
accidentally separate from the drawbar (A) while
transport- ing. Using the appropriate adapter
parts, attach the chain to the tractor drawbar
support or other specified anchor location.
Provide only enough slack in the chain to permit
turning. See your John Deere dealer for a chain
with a strength rating equal to or greater than
the gross weight of the towed machine. AB6 . SS

TRANSPORT SAFELY Always disengage PTO. Slow
moving vehicle (SMV) emblem and reflectors must
be clean, in good condition, and visible from
behind. Beware of oncoming traffic and roadside
obstructions. Transport cutter in fully raised
position. When possible, lock rockshaft control
lever in raised position to help prevent
accidental lowering. Travel slowly over rough
terrain. sBAWz2a02 WON z4SY AD 27
0L87
PRACTICE SAFE MAINTENANCE The blades and blade
holder may rotate for several minutes after PTO
is shut off. Look and listen for rotating
driveline to stop before working on the
cutter. When servicing blades or blade holded, it
will be necessary to work underneath cutter. Be
sure to support cutter frame with safety stands
to prevent accidental lowering. Do not position
safety stands under axle or wheel supports
because these components can rotate.
AVOID HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDS Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Relieve pressure before disconnect- ing
hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections
before applying pressure. Keep hands and body
away from pinholes and nozzles which eject fluids
under high pressure. Use a piece of cardboard to
search for leaks. If ANY fluid is injected into
the skin, it must be surgically removed within a
few hours by a doctor familiar with this type
injury or gangrene may result.
