DESCRIPTION The John Deer e Nos. 23A and 23B Unit
Planters are self-conta ined planters driven by
the press wheel. They are designed to attach to
any 1-3 /4-inch to 2-1 /4-inch rear-mounted
square tool bar. They are easy to attach and
detach, and the low pos it ion of the hopper
gives uniform plant- ing. Spring pressure is
built into each unit to aid in penetration in
firm ground. Shovel standards are available for
making a furrow. They are both drill planters.
They will not check or hill-drop. Multiple unite
of the planters may be spaced at a 20-inch
minimum, based on the length of the tool bar and
tool bar carrier attaching parts. The seed hopper
on the No. 23A is driven by an 18-inch press
wheel. A fertilizer attachment is not furnished
for the No. 23A because the 18- inch press wheel
will not drive both the seed hopper and the
fertilizer hopper. If it is desired to apply
fertiliser at the same time the No. ?3A is being
used, it is necessary to u9e a side-dressing
attachment. The No. 23B Unit Planter can be
equipped with a fertilizer attachment. On this
planter the seed hopper and fertilizer attachment
are driven by a 22-inch press wheel. However, if
gauge shoes are used in conjunction with the
fertilizer attachment, it is necessary to add
wheel weights to the press wheel. Attachments
that are available will be found in the
Attathmenl section of this Operator'e Manual.

If a single unit is being used back of the
tractor, set the tractor wheel tread as nearip as
possible the same width as row width desired.
Consult your tractor Operator's Manual for wheel
tread adjustments. Multiple units of the planters
may be spaced at a 20-inch minimum based on the
length of the tool bar and tool bar carrier
attaching parts. P L A N T I N 0G C T T O
N Remove the corn cut-off from the seed hopper by
unscrewing the thumb- screw which holds it in
place. Remove 9eed plate and turn false plate so
that raised side is up. Install cotton spider
which is held in place with the same thumbscrew
used for the corn cut-off. The hole for the
thum bscrew in cotton plate is off to one side
of center and must be lined up with corre-
sponding hole in combination gear ring and blank
bean plate. The quantity of cotton planted is
regulated by the cotton gate on out- side front
of hopper. Turning the thumb nut, which controls
this gate, to the right, opens the gate and
increases the quantity of seed planted.
Turning the thumb nut to the left, closes the
gate and decrea9es the quantity. For best result
u9e the lar ge 12-tooth sprocket on the press
wheel axle and the small 6-tooth sprocket on the
hopper drill shaft. This drives the cotton picker
wheel at its fastest speed. P L A N T I N

T C O0 T T N Remove the cotton spider. If
small grain such as feterita, kafir corn,
sorghum, ete., is to be planted, the false plate
must always be installed so that the raised side
is up. If large seed such as corn is to be
planted, remove the false plate and reinstall it
with the flat side up. Some plate require
special false plates (9ee pages 13- lS). Select
and place in position the desired seed plate.
Install the corn cut-off, fitting the raised part
over the cut-off stop near bottom of hopper.
Fasten it in place with the thumb- screw which
passes through center of cut-off and screws into
gear ring stud bolt. Be sure the cut-off plate
fits down tightly against the false ring.

Depth of planting is controlled by the press
wheel. To plant deeper, loosen nuts A and
raise press wheel until desired planting depth
is obtained. Lock wheel in position by tightening
nuts A. Todecrease the planting depth, loosen
nuts A and lower press wheel. When a gauge
shoe is used, the press wheel should be allowed
to float so that the depth of planting is
determined by the gauge shoe. However, when gauge
ehoe is used on the No. 23B Unit Planter
equipped with a tertilizer attachment, it is
necessary to use wheel weights on the press
wheel. To float the press wheel when gauge shoe
is used, loosen bolts A. 0 F R N T E N D W E I
G H T S If two No. 23B Planters are used on the
same tool bar on a John Deere Model 420 or 40
Tricycle Tractor, front end weights must be used
on the tractor.

A D J U S T I N G S P R I N G A spring is
provided for applying down pressure to the
planting unit. The adjusting collar is located at
the bottom of the spring. Moving this collar up
and holding in place with the set screw, will
apply more pressure on the unit when planting.
The shock spring absorbs shock when the planter
is in the raised position.
P R E S S U R E
The planter should be leveled by means of the
upper link on the three point hitch. For proper
operation of planter there should be a minimum of
1-inch spacing between the shock spring and
collar A. S A F E T V S U G G E0S T 1 N S Care
should be exercised, during the operation of a
planter, to avoid injury to the operator and his
assistants. Do not grease, oil, or adjust a farm
machine that is in motion. Only one personthe
operatorshould be permitted on the tractor
platform when the tractor and planter are in
operation. Never ride, or permit others to ride,
on the drawbar of the tractor or on the
planter. Be careful when operating on hillsides
because the tractor may tip sideways if it
strikes a hole, ditch, or other
irregularity. Finally, remember thie An
accident is usually caused by someone's
carelessness, neglect, or oversight.

B D R I L L I N G Twelve different drilling
distances can be obtained with one seed
plate. Four sprockets are shipped with the
planter. Combinations of these four sprockets
between the press wheel and planter drill shaft
will give drilling distances as outlined in chart.
