What is the CyberBridges Pilot?
  • Funded by the NSF Cyberinfrastructure
    (CI)-Training, Education, Advancement, and
Mentoring (TEAM) program solicitation in 2005
  • 11 Awards were made for 250,000 each
  • CI-TEAM 2005 was a demonstration program
  • Expanded in 2006 to a multi-year implementation
    program
  • CI-TEAM is increasing the effectiveness,
    penetration, and utilization of CI

Global CyberBridges, a U.S. implementation with
international Partners to improve the CI
training for a new generation of scientists,
increasing discovery rate for all domains.
  • Partnerships / underserved groups
  • The CyberBridges pilot project has shown that
when a faculty member enters into a partnership
with a graduate student and a CI research
  • scientist, the results are compelling. FIU is
the largest Hispanic Serving minority institution
in the continental U.S., and the CyberBridges
  • Ph.D. fellows are drawn from this pool.
  • Link to cyberinfrastructure CyberBridges
    Curriculum Utilizes NSF funded CI
  • Courses in Advanced Networking
    Grids/Distributed Computing combined with CI
    augmented dissertation level research projects
  • OSG and US RE Networks support high performance
computational demands of CB science engineering
    projects
  • Previous/Expected outcomes
  • CB impacts faculty research and teaching today,
and the faculty of the future.
  • Institutions across the U.S. can replicate the CB
model of supporting CI by investing in graduate
    students by re-focusing institutional
expenditures from IT support, to synchronous
    fellowships
  • A new generation of scientists engineers
capable of fully integrating CI into the whole
    educational, professional, and creative process
    of their diverse disciplines
  • CyberBridges Fellows win coveted internship
    positions
  • "Being a CyberBridges fellow strengthened my
credentials for this position to help optimize
software for bioinformatics applications on IBM's
Blue Gene supercomputer system," said Milledge.
  • "As a CyberBridges fellow, I was more competitive
for the internship at the Abbott/Guidant
Corporation in Santa Clara, California because I
have proven my ability to apply high-performance
computing to my biomedical research," said
    Gutierrez.
