How to Hold
  • Put the buoy into the palm of your hands
  • Put you index finger over the top between the two
    ridges on the Call
  • Put your thumb at the front of the keel
    underneath
  • Keep all of your fingers left over straight!

The Still
  • This is used at colours and evening colours
    within the corps. Along with other uses.
  • When someone hears the still they come to the
    position of attention.

The Carry On
  • This tells the ships company that they can carry
    on with their duties
  • It is generally used in conjunction with the side
    and the still

The General Call
  • This call has a sharp stop to it half way
    through. To do this put your tongue into the end
    of the call.
  • This is followed by and order which ranges from
    putting kit away to being called to colours etc.
    this is the most common pipe used in the SCC

Call the Boatswains Mate
  • Sound six short high notes.
  • You use it to call the boatswains mate, i.e if
    the boatswains mate is needed back on the
    gangway.

Pipe The Side
  • When you hear this you are required to stand to
    attention
  • You will hear this when an officer arrives on
    board

  • Afloat
  • 1. As bow oar is brought in and ends when there
    is no way.
  • 2. As the VIP climbs the ladder and ends when
    VIP steps onboard.

  • 1. As the car draws alongside the unit or
    by foot at a pre- determined point.
  • 2. As the VIP approaches the gangway and
    ends as VIP steps onboard.

Who Can Be Piped Over the Side?
  • Her Majesty the Queen
  • The Royal family when in RN or RM uniform.
  • RN officers of Flag Rank.
  • RN officers in command of HM ships or shore based
    establishments.

  • Sea Cadet Officers when in uniform
  • District Officers (DO) (or Assistant District
    Officers (ADO) when representing the DO).
  • Commanding Officers (when arriving and leaving
    their own unit or when going to another unit at a
    pre arranged time)

  • Can be traced back to the days of the Crusades of
    1248
  • It was worn as a badge of rank of the Lord High
    Admiral Of the English from 1485 and by his
    successor until 1562.
  • After 1562 it was used in English Fleets to pass
    orders.
  • And its only been known as the Boatswains Call
    since 1671

Lash up and Stow
  • Can be known as the Special Call or Lash up and
    Stow.
  • Has a verbal order which must be said afterwards.
    Heave Ho, Heave Ho, Heave Ho, Lash up
    and Stow all the hands turn out.

  • Used to call officers to dinner.

  • Used to get peoples attention.
  • To advise people that it is now time for
    bed/lights out.
