2
What is Title I?
  • Small group pull out
  • Usually 4 - 6 days out of the cycle
  • 15 - 20 minutes per session
  • 3 - 5 students per group
  • Supports classroom teaching

3
How do students qualify?
  • Teacher recommendation
  • DIBELS scores
  • Rigby Benchmark tests
  • IRI - Informal Reading Inventory

4
How long do they stay in the program?
  • They stay in as long as they need extra
    assistance in reading skills
  • OR
  • Until there are more students with a greater need
    than they have
  • OR
  • Until parents dont want them in anymore

5
FYI
  • Title I is NOT special education.
  • Students have to qualify each year - they are not
automatically in just because they were last
    year.
  • Parents can accept or deny the service.
  • There is a parent/student/teacher compact that
    has to be signed.

    Kindergarten

What is it?
  • 12 - 20 week series of lessons
  • 30 minutes every day
  • One-on-one
  • Each lesson works on fluency, accuracy,
    comprehension, and decoding strategies in
familiar reading, new reading, letter work, and
    writing
  • Serves four kids per 20 week session, average of
    eight per year

9
What training does the teacher have?
  • Seven hours of graduate credit
  • One full year of training - three hours per week
  • Continuing Contact - two graduate credit hours
per year required - one day long meeting per
month (for the rest of your life!)
  • Behind the Glass sessions

10
What assessment is used?
  • Six part test called the Observation Survey (OS)
  • Includes letter identification, sight word test,
    concepts about print, vocabulary writing,
    dictation, and text level reading
  • Teacher ranking of class
  • Other needs assessment (DIBELS)

11
How do students qualify?
  • All students are given the observation survey (or
at least part of it) in the spring of their
    Kindergarten year.
  • The lowest scoring 12 students are given the
whole OS in the fall of 1st grade.
  • Lowest four in reading recovery, others in Title
    I
  • Title students and teacher recommended students
    tested for 2nd round

12
What happens when lessons are over?
  • Discontinued - Have met the average of the class
and no further support is needed
  • Recommended - May be recommended for Title I
    support or Special Education testing
