Title: SESAME First Phase Beamlines:
1SESAME First Phase Beamlines Powder Diffraction
Beamline
By Engin Ozdas
2The powder diffraction is the principal technique
for the determining the structure of materials
that do not readily form large ordered crystals.
In most laboratories the production of
diffraction-quality crystals may be months (or
years) behind new discoveries.
3It is the technique of choice for the analysis of
novel materials where synthesis is undeveloped or
highly strained materials subject to twinning. In
certain cases, for example in mineral processing
or in the study of materials under extreme
conditions, powder diffraction can be the optimum
method for material research.
4It has the advantage of a relatively simple
scattering geometry and has been aided by the
development of the intense sources of synchrotron
radiation and advances in data analysis using
modelling, direct methods and global optimisation
methods.
5In recent years, powder diffraction has provided
crucial structural information for many
strategically important materials including high
temperature superconductors, fullerenes, oxides,
mesoporous materials and assembled nanoscale
assemblies.

- The beamline is likely to be used researchers
who are not expert in synchrotron techniques and
so it will be designed to be simple use and
adjust. It will be supported by the neccesary
analytical algorithms to ensure rapid online
