Has serious youth violence increased?
  • Youth offending remains relatively stable
  • Violence makes up 21 of youth crime and is
    decreasing
  • Increased proportion of serious violence is being
    committed by young people
  • Knife crime fell by 16 in 2007/08 but of the 26
    youth murders 16 were by stabbing
  • A third of gun-enabled crime (inc CS and air
    weapons) was committed by young people

Crime and Disorder Act 1998
  • 37(1) It shall be the principal aim of the youth
    justice system to prevent offending by children
    and young persons.
  • 38(1) It shall be the duty of each local
    authority, acting in co-operation with the
    persons and bodies mentioned, to secure that, to
    such extent as is appropriate for their area, all
    youth justice services are available there.
  • 39(1) Subject to subsection (2), it shall be the
    duty of each local authority, acting in
    co-operation with the persons and bodies
    mentioned, to establish for their area one or
    more youth offending teams.
