2
Description
  • Rivers and streams are are lotic ecosystems they
are bodies of water that move rapidly, as opposed
to lentic ecosystems such as lakes and ponds.
  • They usually originate in the mountains and work
    their way downhill
  • Rivers and streams account for 3 of the worlds
    freshwater.
  • They also contain 41 of the
  • worlds fish species.
  • They are occupied by a wide
  • variety of fish, gastropods,
  • insects, and algae.

3
Location
  • Rivers and streams are everywhere in the world.
  • Streams normally run into lakes or rivers.
  • Two small rivers that combine to form a larger
    river are called tributaries.

4
Eutrophication
  • Eutrophication is generally a result of nutrient
    pollution
  • Promotes excessive plant growth and decay, favors
certain weedy species over others, and is likely
to cause severe reductions in water

    quality.
  • In this picture of the
  • Potomac River, a type
  • of cyanobacteria
  • bloom is seen. It
  • deprives all aquatic
  • vegetation of sunlight.

5
Extinction
  • Bull Trout thrive in cold lakes and rivers, but
as the world has grown warmer (global warming),
the Bull Trout have begun to
    die off.
  • It was also
    hunted because it feeds on
other fish, and fishermen were afraid
    that it would threaten the
    fishing industry.

6
Further Interest
  • Rivers and streams cover approximately 0.8 of
    the earths surface.
  • They also contain 0.009 of the earths total
    water supply.
