Classroom Management
2
The Reflexive Classroom Manager Thomas G. Ryan,
1st Edition
  • To increase the likelihood of bringing about a
change in student behaviour, the teacher must
first be willing to examine and change his or her
own behaviour. (Levin Nolan, 2000, p. xiii)
  • We teach who we are Self-Study

3
Chapter One
  • The Educators Toolbox Reflection via Action
    Research
  • Classroom management refers to those actions of
classroom teachers that create a positive
classroom climate within which effective teaching
and learning can occur. (Question Action,
    Reflection, Revision Action Research)

4
  • If students are successful and enjoy positive
relationships with adults, they are generally
more interested in school, engaged in learning
activities, and interact with their peers and
teachers. (Levin Nolan, 2004, p. xiii)
  • Problem What tools do I need to achieve this.
  • Answer Be Reflexive Be aware of your actions,
words, thoughts self within the class!

5
  • Detentions, public reprimands, removed
privileges, suspensions, calls to parent and
failing grades seem to do little to motivate
    disruptive students toward appropriate behaviour.
    (Levin Nolan, 2004, p. xvii)

6
Who are you?
  • Who you are may be an unexamined element.
  • Who you are in front of the class (teacher) may
be unknown to you at this time.
  • Teaching is a developmental journey (p. 11).
  • You are teaching content and citizenship.

7
  • Dont compete with your students or assume the
full responsibility for their learning. Learning
is a dual responsibility. (Levin Nolan, 2004,
    p. xxiii)

8
Task 1 - You Decide !
  • Write a 3 page Classroom Management Plan
  • 3 Elements Ch 6 in our text
  • Statement of Philosophy (I believe)
  • Key Elements within a plan (search )
  • Your Rationale for the above stances (Why)
  • 10 points For Task Completion Archived and
    handed back last class.
  • Exemplars See Chapter 6

9
  • Teaching is . . . The use of preplanned
behaviors, founded in learning principles and
child development theory and directed toward both
    instructional delivery and classroom management,
that increase the probability of affecting a
positive change in student behavior (Levin
    Nolan, 2004, p.4).
  • Chapter 6 of our text

10
  • . . . Effective classroom management is
    inseparable from effective instruction (Levin
Nolan, 2000, p.7). Discipline or disciplino the
latin root actually means to instruct.

11
In this course . . .
  • A good approach for teachers to adopt when
studying classroom management is to experiment
with different ways of adapting the principles
discussed to their own classroom situations,
gradually determining what set of principles best
matches their own unique styles of teaching and
the unique demands of their specific classroom
    settings (Martin, Sugarman McNamara, 2000,
    p.14). .
  • This is a developmental journey, not an event,
and has no endpoint! (Ryan, 2004)
