What is a buttress?What is a flying buttress? A
buttress is a support -- usually brick or stone
-- built against a wall to support or reinforce
it. A flying buttress is a free-standing buttress
attached to the main structure by an arch or a
half-arch.

Pier
A long structure built out into the sea for
people to walk on. A pillar supporting bridge or
arch.

A cantilever is a beam supported on only one end.
The beam carries the load to the support where it
is resisted by moment and shear stress.1
Cantilever construction allows for overhanging
structures without external bracing. Cantilevers
can also be constructed with trusses or
slabs. This is in contrast to a simply supported
beam such as those found in a post and lintel
system. A simply supported beam is supported at
both ends with loads applied between

Tie Struts
You must understand the meaning of struts, and
ties as these are always mentioned in
examinations. All structures have forces acting
on them. You should have an understanding of
tensile, compressive and shear forces (see
previous sheet). The part of the structure that
has a tensile force acting on it is called a TIE
and the part that has a compressive force acting
on it is called a STRUT.
