3Week 2 progress
- Because of a long, but enjoyable 3-day home-stay,
this week seems to have flown by and we couldnt
go to as many places as we previously planned - However, traveling to a couple new places such as
Odaeba we have found a couple of new vending
machines unique ones indeed but nothing too
spectacular yet
4FURTHER INFO ON VENDING machines
- Despite the fact that Japanese is a language that
seems to add a new loan word from another
language everyday to its vocabulary, its
surprising to find that it has organically
created its own word for vending machine it
comes with its own kanji and actually makes
perfect sense - ????? (ji-dou-han-bai-ki)
5Step by Step guide to using an average
vending machine
- Introduction to Guide
- Since we did a translation of products last time,
this time we decided to do something different
with respects to language - This week, we have provided instructions along
with close-up pictures on how to use an average
vending machine, a drink vendor in this example - The instructions are provided in full Japanese
with English translations for everybody to learn

10Vending machine of the week
Located right in the onsen in Odaeba, this unique
machine dispenses packaged underwear.

5Description - For all those who have lost or just want a
new pair of underwear, this machine is perfect
for them. It comes with a variety of patterns,
colors and sizes to cater to different
individuals.Comments - As far as we have seen, nothing of this
sort exists in Canada. As reserved as the
Japanese are, I would say Canadians are more
embarrassed about purchasing underwear in public.
Most unique machine found this week!
11Other vending Machines (1)
- Machine Type
- Cold Treats VendorUsefulness
- 1 2 3 4
5Creativity - 1 2 3 4
5Description - For all the baseball fans that want to
stray away from all the greasy fast food sold at
the stadium, they can go for a quick cold treat
of an Asian flavor. this machine offers a cheap
and delicious solution.Comments - Ice cream machines are also pretty abundant
in Canada, but they definitely do not offer lemon
ice cream cake! Trying the lemon cake was a good
choice, it was full of taste and worth the 150
yen. One thing to note is that unlike the ice
cream machines in Canada that make that loud
sucking noise, these ones are much quieter.
Neither the most useful or exciting machine, this
cold treat dispenser is located right in the
baseball stadium.
12Other vending Machines (2)
Found in one of the bigger alleyways near
Mukogaoka-Yuen train station, this is the only
newspaper vending machine we have seen thus far
in Japan.
- Machine Type
- Cold Treats VendorUsefulness
- 1 2 3 4
5Creativity - 1 2 3 4
5Description - Very useful for places where there is no
newspaper/magazine store. This machine dispenses
three different daily newspapers for a cheap 130
to 140 yen. Best for those in a hurry to get on
the train and in for a long ride.Comments - Canada has newspaper vending machines as
well, albeit a lot less stylish, yet a lot more
space consuming and insecure. Japanese newspaper
vending machines look a lot nicer and prevent
theft of additional newspapers, unlike the
Canadian ones where you can open the gate for a
dollar and take as many as your greedy heart
desires.
13Afterthoughts and conclusions
- We have come to realize that all vending machines
weve seen are placed in very appropriate places
underwear machines in the onsen, drink and
tabacco machines in the streets, gacha gacha in
toy stores, etc. We cant expect to just walk
down streets and find special machines. Hence,
we have new plans for next week in order to
search out what we really came to see.
14Plans for next week
- We have searched much of the outside streets in a
lot of the major popular places in Tokyo.
However, no interesting machine has been found
just more and more drink and tobacco ones. Thus,
next week with more time and home-stay out of the
way, we are planning to go inside places such as
stores, game centers, coffee shops, etc.
Hopefully there is more inside than out! - We have plans to visit Akihabara and Disney Sea
for the upcoming week, hence we will be able to
check out the anime district as well as a theme
park in our search for unique machines.
