  • Was the old Orsay station and Hotel building
  • station opened in 1900
  • 1939 the station closed
  • People planned to knock it down
  • in 1973 was put on the Supplementary Inventory of
    Historical Monuments
  • in 1978 it was listed as a Historical Monument
  • became a museum in1986.

  • art from the second half of the 19th century and
    the beginning of the 20th century
  • collections mainly come from the Musée du Louvre,
    the Musée du Jeu de Paume, and the Musée dArt
    Moderne.
  • The Musée dOrsay focuses on a time period and
    expands the range of the collection
  • Time periods include artists born after 1820, or
    those who emerged with the Second Republic (Le
    Musee du Louvre), impressionism from 1947 onward
    (Le Musee du Jeu de Paume), and works by artists
    born after 1870 (Le Musee National dArt Moderne)

  • Once a mansion called Biron Hotel
  • built by Abraham Peyre
  • died one year after mansion was built
  • his widow gave the house to the Dutchess of Maine
  • when she died the house went to the Duke
    Dutchess of Biron
  • Reign of Terror
  • Reign of Napoleon
  • House sold to Dames du Sacre-Coeur
  • closed in 1905
  • mansion was set to be destroyed
  • artists(including Rodin) rented rooms

  • Rodin pleaded with the government
  • seven years later the government gave in
  • after he made donations to the state
  • The museum opened to the public on August 4, 1919

  • Has both a garden and a main building
  • home to marble, bronze, plaster, wax, and
    terracotta sculptures, drawings, ceramics, and
    pieces of art from Auguste Rodin and other
    artists (Renoir, Monet Van Gogh)
  • Le Musee Rodin shares 6,600 sculptures with the
    Villa des Brilliants in Meudon.
  • There are childhood paintings of Augustes family
    and friends
  • all of Rodins works have similar themes
  • The Musee Rodins collection includes The Kiss
    and The Thinker
