Title: SOA CIO Perspective

1
SOA --- CIO Perspective
2
  • Gartner reports that "By 2008, SOA will be a
    prevailing software engineering practice, ending
the 40-year domination of monolithic software
architecture" and that "Through 2008, SOA and web
services will be implemented together in more
than 75 percent of new SOA or web services
    projects."

3
  • A service-oriented architecture isn't a
technology it's a way of doing business. It can
even be a way of transforming your business.

4
  • The potential of an SOA is in dramatically
speeding up the application development process.
  • It is a way to build applications and systems
that are more adaptable, and in doing so, IT
becomes more agile in responding to changing
    business needs

5
  • At its simplest, an SOA turns application
functionality into the software equivalent of
Lego bricks. Take a piece of software (say, a
    customer-number verification tool), strap a
well-defined interface onto it, and let other
applications use the new "service" as needed.
Create a library of such mix-and-match parts, and
you can build composite applications to meet
almost any business need, the same way Legos can
morph from castle to crocodile to catapult when
    the same components are rearranged

6
  • Example Restaurant
  • Waiter
  • Cook
  • Manu card

7
  • Reworking your IT framework as an SOA takes time,
money, nerve and a strong business driver.
  • Done for the right reasons, an SOA can save
money on development costs (eventually) and
    increase your agility.

8
Example-- POC completed
  • Use of Workflow system for approval.
  • Real time interaction with SAP using a middle
    ware adaptors
  • Generation of service requests for creation of a
    document and pull of information
  • Applicability of the same architecture for
    information pull through mobiles
  • Applicability to dealer vendor portals
  • Applicability to third party manufacturers.

9
Example ??
  • Intranet being developed for personalised web
    pages based on hierarchy.
  • Link to KRA of the person
  • Service requests to a database / cubes based on
    id
  • Population of web page

10
Questions-
  • Why should top management be involved in
deploying SOA. It is arole of CIO.

11
Thanks
12
  • SOA is not a quick fix.
  • SOA will only work if organizations lead with
manageability. SOA by its very nature demands the
aggregation of IP from many different sources.
Scalability within SOA will come from
    managementnot development.
  • SOA will only work if it is implemented within a
    business process context.

13
  • SOA assumes that you will begin to write
applications differentlyas a series of tightly
defined services implemented in a loosely coupled
    manner.
  • SOA dictates that change is the norm since this
approach to software mimics the way a business
    operates and evolves.
