2Background
- VET in schools began in early 1990s
- Increasing participation in education and
training by young people - Significant decline in young peoples full time
labour participation - School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
(SATs) have been available for over 10 years
3Compulsory Participation (1)
- Compulsory participation refers to the period of
time in which young people must participate in
'earning or learning' - for two years after the young person completes
compulsory schooling (i.e. after they complete
Year 10 or turn 16 years of age whichever comes
first) or - until they turn 17 years of age or
- until they complete a Queensland Certificate of
Education or a Certificate III (or higher level)
vocational qualification
4Compulsory Participation (2)
- Parents will be obliged to ensure their child
participates as required. This obligation
doesn't apply if the young person has a paid job
for at least 25 hours per week or is under an
employment exemption under the Vocational
Education, Training and Employment Act 2000

their career aspirations and planning - Supporting them in their SET Planning (in Year

Events with your student - Sharing your own work experiences with them
- Encouraging your student to talk with relatives,
friends and/ or colleagues working in jobs or
industries of interest to them

- Providing career development linked to SET
Planning (Year 10) - Coordinating students participation in VET in
schools programs - Ensuring VET in schools forms an appropriate
component of an overall school program,
contributing to achievement of the QCE - Assisting students to undertake a SAT
- Helping eligible SATs students with travel and
accommodation support funding - Assisting SATs students with special needs to
access support  - Exercising a duty of care to students in the
workplace - Ongoing monitoring and support to help students
meet their school and VET in schools commitments - Recording results for all education and training
