3Where can I live?
- Free advice on finding accommodation on and
off campus is provided through Nottingham
Hospitality. University accommodation provides
over 6,000 rooms, either owned by the University
or provided by external developers, all close to
the campuses, purpose built and ranging from
modern self-catering flats to traditional halls

4Finance
- Taking time to improve your employment prospects
by studying a university course does come with a
financial cost. It is best to be clear from the
beginning how much the fees are going to be and
what support the University can give you in
relation to financial issues. - To find information on the cost of each course

several different ways to pay for the course. For
more information on this please click here for
the student fees office. - Studentships
- The University of Nottingham has various sources
which students can approach to seek help with
funding their study. Please follow the various
links on the University Sources of Funding page
for more information. - There are also various sources of support you may
be eligible for if you find yourself in
difficulty when you have started your course. The
School of Education can provide you with
information on these should it be necessary.

5Studying with us
- The University of Nottingham is the Times
Higher University of the year 2006-2007 and is
part of the Russell Group of Universities whose
aim is to promote the interests of Universities
in which teaching and learning are undertaken
within a culture of research excellence. Every
member of the Russell Group is committed to the
undertaking of well-managed research of the
highest quality and integrity. It is in this
atmosphere that our teaching takes place. - School of Education Research concentrates on a
number of themes looking at three major
overlapping research agendas - research for and about a knowledge society
- research for and about a changing education
profession - research for and about global and local
educational cultures and contexts. - The School runs an undergraduate programme for
part time students on subjects ranging from
Archaeology and History to Modern Languages, Art
and Creative Writing. Students can study from
Certificate level right through to BA (Hons) in
Combined Studies, Fine Art or Humanistic
Counselling Practice or Studies. There are also
five teacher training programmes, twenty two
postgraduate taught programmes and seven
different types of postgraduate research
programmes. This means that we have a vibrant
community of 2500 part time undergraduates and
more than 600 postgraduate students within the
School. Our emphasis is on professional
development and personalised support, offering
various modes of learning and study to suit our
students.
6Resources
- This is not just about books although the
University does have eleven different libraries.
The excellent Education collection is housed in
the innovative Djanogly Learning Resource Centre
on Jubilee Campus. But 'resources' is also
includes access to experts, laboratories, other
students, and technology. As a student at the
School of Education you will have access to - Research-active academics

- Well-equipped classrooms and science laboratories

- There are also facilities for MA students in the
Graduate School located on the University Park
campus. The Graduate School has social space and
networked PCs for use by our students. In
addition, there are dedicated meeting rooms and
that can be booked by all our students.

The University also has other videos telling you
about the University, its teaching, our location

beautiful grounds in which the University is set.
8Support for students
- The School of Education and the University
understands that students may need all different
types of support throughout their time studying
with us academic, practical, medical and
emotional. This page provides links to the
various services which the University supplies
which are supplemented by support offered in the
School. Each student will have a personal tutor
and each course has a course leader to help with
academic issues and help point you in the
direction of other sources of support if needs
be. These other sources might be the office of
Academic Support, the Centre for Career
Development, the Centre for English Language
Education, the Chaplains, and the Health Centre. - For international students the International
Office can offer advice and support on everything
from opening a bank account to making your visa
application. The Graduate School has a remit to
help support the needs of postgraduate taught and
research students, providing training events,
social events and advice. The Graduate School has
many welcome events planned for the first few

here. Student Services offer a range of
specialist services to students including
counselling services and childcare services.
9Accessibility
- The University of Nottingham welcomes
applications from all - students irrespective of age, race and gender.
Our aim is to - provide a high level of support and guidance from
the moment - you first enquire to the moment you graduate. The
University has - created a brief guide to existing facilities and
services for students - who have a disability which can be accessed here.
The Disability - Policy Advisory Unit (DPAU) is responsible for
promoting access - for all students and applicants who have a
disability by influencing - the development of policy and procedures relating
to disability. - Academic Support can offer assistance on
alternative formats, dyslexia screening and
assessment, note taking, reading and library
support and one-to-one sessions. The School of
Education has additional resources. The School
has its own Equality and Diversity committee
which works to make sure that University policies
are implemented across the School. There is also
a Disability Liaison Officer who will work with
any students with a disability to make sure that
they are supported. - The School of Education also places an emphasis
on making its courses accessible to those who are
in full time employment. Many of our courses
offer flexible routes with intensive block or
twilight sessions making them accessible to the
widest range of students.
10Nottingham and its surrounding area
Nottingham is in the heart of England and set in
some beautiful surrounding countryside. The city
itself is offers an amazing array of experiences
from historical buildings to a vibrant music
culture. The city is 10 minutes from the
University and a compact city centre offering an
amazing variety of shops, restaurants and pubs.
For local entertainment there are two major
theatres (The Royal and The Playhouse), the Royal
Concert Hall which puts on a full range of
performances from comedians to opera. The
National Ice Arena is also a popular venue
attracting big name speakers, live sporting
events and world class musicians from classical
to indie.
Nottinghamshire has a rich and varied heritage
beautiful and rural scenery. The Visit Nottingham

legends and the lively market towns, historic
buildings which can be found within easy reach.

11Before you arrive
- There are various bits and pieces you should have
received before you arrive. You should have your
offer letter, details on how to register and
information on induction. The University has
instituted a new system for registering this year
which enables you to do the majority of the
process from home. - For All Students online registration is available
from 3rd September. New students will be
contacted by the Registry with a temporary
password and username to get onto the
registration website. You should go to
http//my.nottingham.ac.uk to register. If you
want more information on the registration process
please go to the registration web pages. If you
have any difficulties contact the Student IT
Helpline by email or phone on (0)155 951 3333. - Full Time Students will also need to confirm
their registration by attending the registration
event in person. For postgraduate Masters and
Research students this will be on Wednesday 26th
September at 3.30 in the Sports Hall. - The University Card is one of the most important
things you will be given when you first arrive at
the University. It will allow you access to
buildings and the library. You should be
contacted when you have accepted your place with
a password and username for the card system. You
will need to upload a digital photograph of
yourself to go on the card. For more detailed

SUBMIT A PHOTO FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY CARD UNTIL YOU

12Student Life
- There are social and academic events going on all
the time at the University and in the area. To
give you a brief idea the University has a very
active Student Union with clubs and societies,
with everything from Art to the Yoga Society.
There is the Arts Centre with comedians, activity
events, dance and plays. The University has
excellent sporting facilities and events are
going on around the University to suit all
tastes. University Radio Nottingham is an award
winning student radio station with interviews,
music, news and competitions. - The School of Education has events going on
throughout the year. These can be based on study
skills or seminar series within research centres
which will keep you up to date with the Research
which your tutors are working on, putting you at
the cutting edge of educational research.

most important thing to know is that if there is
anything you are unsure about you should feel
