springboard diving and others.
7Racing is another form of competition.
- Racing is sometimes called side-by-side
competition. Any type of race is included such
as running, swimming, rowing, cycling, skating
and performance based race such shooting baskets
in basketball.
8Team competitions have specific offensive and
defensive tactics!
- These tactics
- Help a team gain a scoring position
- Defend your teams goals
- Need to be learned and practiced
9A good offense is built upon the combined
strengths of each player on the team.
- Important offensive skills include
- Ball control- the ability to maintain possession
of the ball - Movement of the ball- changing the position of
the ball in relation to the goal (passes,
carrying, dribbling, etc.)
10Movement with the ball is important!
- The ball must be in the correct position in order
to score. - Players must move the ball in order to get an
opportunity to score. - A good player will move to find the open spaces
on the court or field. - Players must work together passing the ball in
order to get in a position to score.
11Movement without the ball is also very important!
- If a player without the ball stands still they
can not help move the ball by receiving a pass. - Experienced players look for open spaces.
- If an offensive player is moving without the ball
it makes it hard for the defensive player to
watch the ball and the player they are guarding. - Moving without the ball creates open spaces for
teammates to move with the ball.
12Team offensive strategies are very important to
learn and practice.
- These strategies separate offensive players from
the defensive players. - They allow the offense a better chance to score.
- Some team strategies include
- Pass and screen
- Give and go
- Give and go away
- Post and pick
- Double post
13Pass and Screen
- This strategy involves two players in
cooperation. - One player passes the ball to a teammate and then
moves to block the teammates defender.
14Give and Go
- This involves two players also.
- One player passes the ball to a teammate and then
runs toward the goal. The first player gets open
to receive the ball back and attempt to score.
15Give and Go Away
- This is a variation of the give and go.
- The player who passes the ball moves away from
the pass in order to open space for another
teammate to attempt a score. The first player is
drawing his/her defender away from the goal.
16Post and Pick
- A stationary player is positioned within scoring
distance of the goal. - Players with or without the ball can use this
strategy. - This can be used to separate players from their
defenders.
17Double Post
- Two players come together to form an obstacle
that a third player must run around. - This creates a large obstacle for defenders.
18Defense
- The purpose of defense is to prevent the opposing
team from scoring, to gain possession of the ball
or allow your team to change from defense to
offense.
19Individual defensive techniques are important
skills to learn!
- Individual defensive techniques
- Close spaces through which a ball or person can
pass - Prevents opponents from improving ball position
- Prevents scoring
20Two basic types of defense
- Zone defense a strategy in which defensive
players guard specific areas on the field or
court - Man-to-Man defense a strategy in which defensive
players cover or guard a specific player
21Successful defensive techniques include
- Advance and challenge opponents with the ball
- Clear the ball away from goals as soon as
possible - Capitalize on offensive weaknesses
- Be aware of your position on the field/court and
follow team strategies
22Please get out your journal paper!
- Respond to the open response question on the next
slide. - Place the completed journal entry (answer to the
open response question) in your journal or
notebook.
23Scoring is the main objective of most sports.
Players have a responsibility to do their best
and work together to produce scoring
opportunities.
- Identify and explain strategies individuals
without the ball can do to help his/her team to
achieve success offensively. - Compare and contrast individual strategy and team
strategy. Use specific details for each strategy.
