Introduction
  • The Global Human Outreach to Terrestrial
    Individuals (GHOTI) has announced a contest to
    determine what planet will be visited for the
    yearly field trip. Contestants must provide a
    brief report on why their selected planet would
    be the best and most interesting planet to visit.
    The winner will receive an all expenses paid
    trip to the chosen destination. You must
    remember the more detail you can provide the
    better.

Task
  • You must write and submit a persuasive essay to
    the contest judges detailing why you feel that
    your planet is the best location for the field
    trip. You must also present the key details from
    your essay to the class.

Process
  • Choose a partner that you work well with.
  • Choose a planet that you and your partner would
    like to visit.
  • Search the Internet for information to complete
    your research form.
  • Write a persuasive essay with your partner using
    the information gathered from your research.

The Research Form
  • This form must be completely filled out by you
    and your partner. If you cannot find an answer
    to a questions, please raise your hand.
  • This form will help guide you on the writing of
    the essay.
  • Each student must submit their own research form.

The Persuasive Essay
  • The essay must be at least one written page long.
    You must include in your essay the following
  • 3 historical facts
  • 2 scientific facts
  • 1 unique characteristic
  • Each student must submit their own essay.

Evaluation
  • The entire assignment is worth 120 points.
  • Each question on the research form is worth 5
    points for a total of 50 points.
  • The persuasive essay will be worth 60 points.
    Each historical fact will be worth 10 points.
    Each scientific fact will be worth 10 points.
    The unique characteristic will be worth 10
    points.
  • You will present to the class the facts you have
    chosen to include in your essay. You will not
    have to read your entire essay. This
    presentation will be worth 10 points.

  • You have collected a lot of information!! The
    judges will surely be convinced that your planet
    is the place to visit.
  • What will you pack on your trip?
  • How long will it take to get there??
  • Do you think you will meet an alien???

Teacher Notes
  • This web quest has two parts. The first part
    will take place in the computer lab where the
    students will gather their information. The
    students will then be able to take this
    information and write their essay either in class
    or at home.
