Title: A Nanosized Silica Sunflower

1
A Nanosized Silica Sunflower This scanning
electron microscopy image represents an inorganic
but vivid silica SUNFLOWER prepared by microwave
plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition
(MPECVD) in a stainless vacuum chamber. If you
take a look at the 100-nm-long white scale bar
beneath the picture, you will be surprised at how
tiny this sunflower is. The sunflower-like
morphology can be attributed to the unique
assembly of one-dimensional silica (SiOx)
nanowires which have very large aspect ratios
because of the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth
mechanism. The picture was provided by Dr.
Ming-Shien Hu who did the CVD experiment in 2004
at Advanced Materials Laboratory led by Drs.
Li-Chyong Chen (CCMS, NTU) and Kuei-Hsien Chen
(IAMS, AS). Submitter Editor Dr. Chia-Liang
