Title: Reading History

1
Reading History
  • Goals
  • Here you will learn how to read history, use the
strategy of note-taking, see the way history
    textbooks ar often organized

2
Set a Purpose
  • Key to setting a purpose for reading history is
to ask questions about what you want to know.
  • - What were the Indian Wars?
  • - When did they take place?
  • - Who was involved?
  • - Where did they take place?
  • - Why did they occur

3
Preview
  • Next, run your eyes over the next several pages
    from an American history textbook.
  • Look for the following items as you preview
    Indian Wars.
  • the title and any section guides or goal
  • boxes.
  • the first and last paragraphs
  • the headings
  • any names, dates, words, or terms set in
    boldface or that are repeated
  • any photos, diagrams, or pictures, and their
    captions.

4
Plan
  • Take a minute to think about what you learned in
    your preview
  • A number of different kinds of Indians were
    involved (Southwest, Nez Perce, Blackfoot,
    Sioux).
  • Several different chiefs were important (Crazy
Horse, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph,
    Geronimo).
  • The Indians Lost A Way of Life Destroyed.

5
Plan Continued
  • Most of this information comes from the headings.
Notice how little you actually have to read and
how much the headings alone can tell you.
  • You learned a lot through your preview.
  • Next you need to make a plan to get the details
that you need to meet your reading purpose.
  • Be sure that the time you spend reading gives you
the information to answer the 5 W questions
    who,what, where, when, and why.
