Inuit Culture
  • Inuit Games

Inuit children had a number of things to keep
them preoccupied, like a doll made of animal
skins. Boys played with small bow and arrows,
spears and kayaks. They also used small knifes
to draw pictures in the snow. The adult Inuits
played make believe, tried to get a stick into a
bone with holes in it and spinned a knife, if it
landed on a person, that person had to perform a
task. They also played tug of war and wrestled.

The Inuit performed dances with drums. The
Inuits also went to a sweatloge instead of church
and they smoked the peace pipe to get incommen
with the spirts, then they poured grass over each
other for spirtual cleansing. Inuits also
respected there elders because they thought they
were wise. This is a peace pipe.

The Inuits Food
  • How The Inuits got their food
  • The Inuits had special ways of catching their
    food . They used to distract musk-oxen with dogs
    then kill the musk-oxen. They also used the same
    technique on wolves.
  • Inuits hunted seal by using a seal indicated
    which was a piece of bone, so that when the seal
    went up to breathe, the seal indicator shook and
    the hunter killed the seal with a spear, with a
    rope attach to it and pulled the seal up.
  • Women also hunted . They built small igloos with
    a hole on the top so the woman could grab an
    unsecpecting bird.
  • Hunters also used a speared shot(arrow) and
    caught their food.

  • What They Ate

They ate a number of different sea animals such
as seal, walrus, buluga and norwhale. They also
ate land animals such as caribou ,musk-oxen,
birds, foxes, mammoth,hares and wolves.

Transportation
  • Inuits walked short distances with snow shoes.
  • The Inuits also used a sled pulled by dogs. The
    sled was made of whale bone
  • Inuits also traveled by water with kayaks and a
    umaik which is a larger vertion of a kayak.
    Kayaks were made of seal skin and drift wood and
    carabou antlers were used as as a stearing column.

The Inuits Housing
  • In the summer tipis and tents are used for living
    in. They usually used seal skin to cover the
    tents and tipis.
  • In the winter, Inuits used igloos to keep warm.
  • They also used autumn houses which were old houes
    that are fixed up.
  • They used ice houses which were houses with ice
    walls and a seal skin roof.

The Inuits Relgion
  • The Inuits believed that when died your soul
    splits in two. Half goes to an animal and the
    other goes to a new born child.
  • The Inuits also believed that they had to do
    things like sacrafice food to keep the spirits
    happy. These things are Tabboos.
  • They also built statues called tupilaks to keep
    enemys away.
