HISTORYEarly Americans
  • The first Canadians and Americans migrated from
    Asia
  • Asians most likely traveled across what is now
    known as the Bering Strait 25,000 years ago when
    the Pacific Ocean was low due to Ice Age.
  • Europeans migrated after 1500 A.D.

Early Americans
  • Early Native Americans used the land to grow
    crops and the animals for food and clothing-
    adapted to environment
  • Inuit- Native Americans of the arctic tundra
  • Pacific coast- mild climate, good resources
  • Southwest- little water or resources
  • Plains- relied on buffalo
  • eastern Woodlands- animals and agriculture

  • North America was discovered by Columbus in
    1492
  • European colonization began in the late 1500s

    and economic opportunity

    climate
  • French- fur trade along St. Lawrence and
    Mississippi Rivers
  • Spain- Florida and southwest- gold, ranches, and
    Christianity
  • 1840s- US gained control of present day
    California, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming,
    Arizona, and New Mexico as a result of war with
    Mexico

  • Advances in technology made farming of large
    areas easier and faster.
  • Industrial developments persuaded people to move
    to the cites causing them to be overcrowded
  • Oregon- treaty between U.S. and Britain to settle
    border

  • The US and Canada have 3 branches of government
    called Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
  • They are both democratic style governments
    (Canada- Constitutional Monarchy US- Federal
    Republic)

    territories including the Commonwealth of Puerto
