1. TC Scope
  • Develop standards for the syntax and semantics of
database languages. Computer processes and human
users store, retrieve, update and administer
large structured data collections using these
    languages.
  • H2 has TAG authority for ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 and
contributes to projects of SC32s Working Groups
WG3 and WG4 on Database Languages and SQL
    Multimedia and Application Packages.

2. Significant Accomplishments
  • H2 Decisions Re SQL Future Directions
  • New SQL Standardization shall be developed first
within INCITS/H2 and then, when appropriate,
    introduced into ISO/IEC JTC 1 (6-2-0)
  • Future enhancements of existing parts of the SQL
standard shall be developed first within
INCITS/H2 and then, when appropriate, introduced
    into ISO/IEC JTC 1 (4-2-2)

7
3. Significant Challenges
  • The decade long decline in TC participation was
slightly reversed when CA spun off Ingres Corp
both are now voting members of H2.
  • Despite opposition from the US, SC 32 WG4
    established a project for a new SQL/MM Part 7
History and progressed a document now out for CD
    ballot.

8
4. Expected Challenges
  • Publishing the final revision of all 9 Parts of
the SQL standard in late 2007 or early 2008.
  • Identifying new SQL standardization initiatives
and/or enhancements of existing parts of the SQL
standard that are sufficiently compelling to
    engage H2 participants.

9
5. Liaison Activities
  • Active INCITS Subgroups
  • J3 Fortran, J4 Cobol, J11 C, J16 C
  • L1 GIS, L2 Codes Char Sets, L8 Metadata
  • T3 ODP
  • Maintenance-mode Standards referenced in H2
    produced standards
  • Ada, Pascal, PL/I
  • X11 M (formerly MUMPS)
  • Consortia and other forums
  • Open GIS Consortium (OGC)
  • Unicode Technical Committee (UTC)
  • W3C

6. Future Trends and Related Technical Activities
  • By expanding SQL capabilities to include
facilities related to first Java and now XML, H2
is working to guarantee that SQL - the current
lingua franca for database access - is maintained
and enhanced so that it will continue its
    relevance in the future.
  • H2 Members (including virtually all of the
    providers of RDBMS products)
  • Voting Bentley, CA, DataDirect, HP, IBM,
    InterSystems, Ingres, JCC, Microsoft, NCR,
    Oracle, Sybase, Whitemarsh
  • Advisory Northrop Grumman

7. How Can We Help?
  • Carry-over from 2005 report
  • Secretariat provided infrastructure including
  • File server
  • Un-monitored/no human gatekeeper
  • Access limited to TC members of record
  • TC Letter Balloting system
  • Unassisted TC membership database access
  • Reports for officers
  • Updates by participants
  • Rapid and automatic adoption of JTC 1 SQL
    standards
