Pyramid and Screen Trap w/ Attractant
The outer three rows of the orchard are baited
with plant volatiles known to be attractants.
These attractants are plum essence and
benzaldehyde. The insects are drawn to the
attractants and then sprayed with precisely timed
applications of the organic pesticide PyGanic to
kill the aggregated bugs. In addition, the
interior of the orchard is regularly sprayed with
kaolin clay to provide a deterrent and make the
baited rows even more attractive. Since the data
from the early years indicated Plum curculio
often entered the orchard from bordering habitats
where they spent the winter, pressure was already
heightened in the border rows, and this strategy
utilized the insects natural tendencies. This
attract-and-kill (or push/pull) strategy was
demonstrated through the 2003 and 2004 growing
seasons to be an effective way of isolating
damage in the outside three rows, thus reducing
damage on the interior of the orchard. However,
there is inconclusive evidence that kaolin clay
may alter (reduce or increase) fruit size. This
research is still uncertain and needs to be
studied further.

• Irritate the PC and force them to move away from
  the Clay toward the outside perimeter of the
  orchard
• Further attract them to the outside perimeter
  using Plum Essence and Benzaldehyde lures
• Hit the PC on the outside border with PyGanic .
• You can use a Synergist in combination with
  Pyganic to increase effectiveness.
