What have we done?
  • New undergraduate degree requirements
  • Students admitted Fall 2006 and following
  • 2 writing courses W
  • 2 quantitative courses Q
  • 6 designated breadth courses B, Sci, Hum, Soc
  • 2 undesignated breadth courses - Faculty or
    program elective requirements
  • Certification process for W, Q and B courses, for
    SFU and transferable college courses

New admission requirements
  • LPI score and English 12/college English or W
    course
  • Math 11 or 12/College math or Q course
  • International students IELTS preferred, or TOEFL
    LPI
  • Standards set consistent with underlying goals
  • Improved preparedness for univ. study

FAL and FAN courses
  • Students entering with lower English or Math
    grades
  • Consistent prep, support, remediation
  • FAL - Education, FAN - Mathematics
  • 4 credits, additive credit, counts in CGPA
  • C or better to proceed to W, Q
  • 2 attempts pre-45 credit hours

What should students take, and when?
  • Many W courses are gatekeepers
  • Some courses are multi-certified
  • Bs and Qs - many lower division, dont delay, 2
    Bs per year?
  • Ws - 1 lower div., 1 upper div. normally in the
    major and at SFU
  • Transfer credit for B, Q, LD W

When does a B count as a B?
  • B wont count when taken in the major, ie.
    Physics course labelled B-Sci wont count as
    B-Sci for Physics majors
  • When multiple Bs exist on a course, student must
    choose one
  • Students must select carefully and think ahead
  • Important to take range of Bs from Year 1
  • Places more emphasis on careful advising and
    other information about course selection, ie.
    create departmental check lists for students?
