- New East Manchester Ltd is a partnership
initiative between Manchester City Council, the
national housing and regeneration agency Homes
Communities Agency, North West Development
Agency and the communities of east Manchester - Encompassing more than 1,900ha extending from
the edge of Manchester City Centre to the
eastern boundary of the city, east Manchester
presents an opportunity for investment and
regeneration on a scale unprecedented in an
English city

Across the different neighbourhoods a
variety of Council service engage with the
community on a daily basis. Youth intervention,
Ward support, Social program, Community safety,
Marketing, Schools and Education, Environmental,
Physical Development, and Economic programmes
5East Manchester Characteristics
- Traditional manufacturing base 60 employment
loss 1975 - 85 - 13 population loss in the 1990s
- Collapse in housing market
- 20 vacant properties, negative equity
- In the top 1 of the most deprived area
(index of multiple deprivation) - Low skills base, high crime/ poor health/ poor
community and retail facilities - Fragile economic base
- 52 households receive benefits
- 14.2 unemployment
- Poor infrastructure and environment

6NEM Key Targets 2008 - 2018
- 9,200 new homes to be built or on site by
2013, increasing to 15,000 by 2018 and 24,000 to
be completed by 2025 - A further 7,000 homes improved by 2013
- An additional 700,000 sq m new business
development by 2018 - 4,000 residents to be supported into
employment by 2013 and a further 3,500 by 2018 - Proportion of pupils gaining 5 GCSEs A - C
to surpass Greater Manchester average by 2011
and the national average by 2013 - Significant improvements to environmental
quality to continue including 50,000 trees
planted by 2018

motivated aptitude tests and skills
assessment Route C - Little experience or
knowledge of sector poor literacy/ numeracy or
practical aptitude further away from the
labour market attitudes / barriers
