Title: Place Value by Mrs' Sherwood
1Place ValuebyMrs. Sherwood
Lets think about what the position of the
numeral means in a number, practice reading large
numbers, write numbers in expanded notation
(expanded form), and tell the place and the value
of a numeral in any position in a number. Lets
get started!
2Periods
3Reading Large Numbers
When you see a large number to be read, start at
the right hand side and think ones, thousands,
millions, billions. Then read the digits in
each period and say the name of the period when
you get to the comma. Try this one
4,569,092,067
4Lets try a few more.
43,609,087,490 189,987,000,223 5,208,321,000
5Expanded Notation
When using expanded notation, we write the value
of each digit. For example, a 6 in the ten
billion place is worth 60,000,000,000. Lets try
it with this number 4,590,432,721
4,000,000,000 500,000,000 90,000,000 400,000
30,000 2,000 700 20 1.
6Now you try!
Write these numbers in expanded form in
your binder. 7,456,284,009
856,942,304 77,098,341,119

40,000 2,000
300 4
977,098,341,119
70,000,000,000 7,000,000,000

300,000 40,000
1,000 100
10 9
10Place and Value
Can you tell the name of the place and the value
of the digit? For example In the number
4,234,789 the red 4 is in the thousands place
and it its value is 4,000.
11Now you try!
Name the place and value of each red
digit. 405,237,694
The five is in the millions place and its value
is 5,000,000.
35,897,479,502
The nine is in the ten millions place and its
value is 90,000,000.
12You did it!
