Title: Reality check

1
Reality check
  • We all know about the situation in the camps. The
terrible things that get reported in the media.
But here is what many dont know

2
What has improved?
  • No Emergency situation
  • No Starvation
  • Banks have opened
  • There is some money exchange
  • Schools are functioning

3
What is in the mind of the people?
  • Now that the emergency is over We Want to GO
    HOME.
  • We have come out of the lions den not to live in
    a crocodile infested lake.

4
One Question remains
  • With the relief work getting underway, people are
moving to a rehabilitation mind set.
  • Though the war is over they know that the
    conflict still remains.
  • Despite that the one question is When will we go
    home?

5
Mind speak
  • Free Us, Transfer us to better facilities .
  • Allow us to go and stay with our relations
  • When are we getting to be normal.
  • The more we stay here we are becoming more
    vulnerable.
  • We are wasting our time, losing our livelihoods
  • We dont want to stay idle anymore
  • This uncertainty is actually killing us!

6
Concerns
  • With the monsoons the houses are giving way
  • It is becoming more difficult to cook
  • Security is becoming insufficient
  • Increase in abuse
  • Rise in Violence
  • Cultural degradation
  • Violation of Human Rights
  • Immoral activities are increasing
  • Children dropping out of school

7
Vulnerables
  • Young women
  • Widows (especially young widows)
  • Children
  • Disabled
  • Aged
  • These people hardly have any support

8
Dilemmas
  • Within the camps there is no safety
  • If you cant protect us when we are in captivity
how can you protect us when we are free?
  • Fear to approach the police
  • Fear to approach the army
  • No women police at night, hence, no where to go
    for our grievances

9
Negative Impacts
  • The war has left many families without elders.
  • Families with many children dont have the elders
or others to take care or offer guidance.
  • There is no companionship for the most vulnerable
    sections
  • Breeding hatred for the forces and the police as
they are seen as oppressors who hold people
    against their will
  • Spread of diseases and lack of adequate medical
    care
  • People resorting to negative livelihood
strategies such as brewing illicit liquor, extra
    marital relationships, escalation of petty
conflicts, poor mental health and loss of self
    esteem.

10
Light at the end of the tunnel
  • There has been a transformation in the minds of
    the people.
  • They feel hopeful to return home and live in
    peace
  • They say, One day we hope to breathe the fresh
air of equity, peace and justice
  • We see light at the end of the tunnel but the
tunnel seems to be getting longer

11
Way forward
  • Urgent needs to be addressed immediately
  • Security for the most vulnerable
  • Stop the extra judicial killings
  • Take stringent actions on those who violate the
rights of those in the camps
  • Restore the confidence in the Police and Security
    forces
  • Provide timely and quality relief
  • Expedite the resettlement of those whose places
of origin are free of landmine etc
