Title: Where Do Our Maths Graduates Go

1
Where Do Our Maths Graduates Go?
A degree is intended to allow you to develop
intellectually, to educate you and to prepare you
for later life. Although some people continue
with their academic subject, many others choose a
career which does not directly involve their
degree subject. A degree in Mathematics develops
skills which are useful not only to those who
carry on to be professional mathematicians but
also for a wide range of careers. A Mathematics
degree develops skills in logical thinking,
solving problems, analysing information,
perseverance, communication, research skills, and
IT skills, all of which are valued in many
fields. Mathematics graduates are successful in
finding careers over the UK as a whole in 1999
under 5 of graduates with degrees in
mathematical subject were unemployed at the end
of their year of graduation, compared with the
average for all subjects of 5.5.

Many of those who graduate with degrees in
Mathematics continue with further study, to widen
their knowledge before entry to a particular area
of mathematics or sometimes to prepare them for
academic research. Others study for postgraduate
certificates, notably that training them to be
teachers. The range of careers entered by
mathematicians is wide, as the data for Reading
and for the whole of the UK confirm. Further
