• Uses visible light to magnify the object
• In lab, use a compound microscope-multiple
  magnifying lenses
• Total Magnification multiplication of the
  magnification of each lens
• Advantage of light microscope examine live
  specimens
• Disadvantage-limited resolution and magnification

Electron Microscope

• Has better resolution and magnification
• Reveals details that are 1000 x smaller than can
  be viewed with the light microscope
• Uses an electron beam in a vacuum to magnify
  objects

Two types of Electron Microscopes

• Transmission electron microscope- used to examine
  the ultrastructure of cells and large protein
  molecules
• Scanning electron microscope- used to examine the
  surface topography of the cell

Advantages/Disadvantages of Electron Microscopy

• Advantages- greater magnification and resolution
  allows you to observe finer details
• Disadvantages have to kill the specimen when
  preparing the specimen for viewing
