4Preserving the past Preserving history is
important to the community in order to recognise
KAMBALDAs unique background. KAMBALDAs
Memorial Garden and Miners' Memorial Wall are
situated behind the Shire office in Kambalda
West. The Garden has a shady gazebo surrounded
by native plants and scented roses. The Memorial
Wall was built in honour of those who lost their
lives whilst working in KAMBALDAs mining
industry.

11Outback environment KAMBALDAs residents are
keen to ensure their scare water resources are
conserved. Numerous waterwise gardens are a
testament to their commitment. The Shire also
encourages water conservation approaches by
applying thick mulch to the large number of
gardens throughout the town in order to retain
water and reduce evaporation. The dry salt
lakes of Lake Lefroy are well known to land
sailing enthusiasts and are a major attraction
to the township.

17Partnerships The community of KAMBALDA are the
winners due to an alliance between the Shire of
Coolgardie and local company, St Ives Mining in
the redevelopment of the towns airstrip and
airport buildings. Not only are there facilities
for the fly-in, fly-out operations of the mines,
but seats are now available for local residents
as well as recreational use for local groups.
Other notable partnerships include the KAMBALDA
Country Clubs revival due to the spirit of
volunteerism within the community together with
new modern accommodation facilities now a
feature within the town.

22Further highlights Congratulations to Di
McIntosh and her hard working Can Can Tidy Towns
committee for their efforts in raising community
awareness of the need to work together on the
numerous projects currently underway in
KAMBALDA. KAMBALDAs Easts Red Hill Lookout
offers superb views over Lake Lefroy, a vast 510
square km salt pan which stretches to the horizon
and is rarely full of water. KAMBALDAs
Community Telecentre is used to access telephone,
fax, email and internet services. It is an
independent organisation owned by the community
providing services which stimulate the creative
use of telecommunications and computer
technology for information access, education,
employment, training and business
enterprise. The 'Katie Karafilis Memorial Night'
is held each year in KAMBALDA in memory of a
local girl who passed away at the age of five.
Funds raised go to the Princess Margaret
Hospital and KAMBALDAs ambulance and fire
services. A great example of the generosity and
spirit of the local community.
