Serial Entrepreneurs May be the Best Bet for
Job Creation

• In its recent competitiveness White Paper, the
  Government directed Business Links to establish
  10,000 new start-up businesses. New small
  businesses are again to be a key part of the
  strategy to generate new growth businesses and
  new jobs. But this policy may miss the point.
  Most start ups fail within the first three years.
  Chris Christou, a former member and chairman of
  ACCAs Small Business Committee, says that serial
  or portfolio entrepreneurs have a much better
  track record of success.

ABSTRACTCREATING A NEW BUSINESS FROM AN EXISTING
ONE FARMERS AS PORTFOLIO ENTREPRENEURS

Institute During the last decade, the start-up of
new small-scale food processing ventures has
increased in the Nordic countries. Many of these
entrepreneurs have their basis in the traditional
farm sector. The aim of this paper is to explore
how existing farm businesses can contribute to
the founding of new enterprises. We argue that
persons who are owner-managers of a farm and then
start a new food processing business, are
portfolio entrepreneurs. We investigate to which
extent resources are made available through the
existing farm business, and if the availability
of resources gives an advantage resulting in
better performance of the new business. Studies
have shown that portfolio business owners account
for a substantial part of new business
formations. This indicates that entrepreneurial
experience as well as other resources portfolio
business owners possess may be valuable in
business start-up processes. Building upon
entrepreneurship theory and resource based
theory, this paper attempts at contributing to
the understanding of how portfolio entrepreneurs
utilize resources available through their
existing business(es) during new start-ups.

ABSTRACTCREATING A NEW BUSINESS FROM AN EXISTING
ONE FARMERS AS PORTFOLIO ENTREPRENEURS
The findings show that portfolio farm
entrepreneurs make extensive use of resources
made available through the farm while developing
a new business within small scale food
processing. This holds for tangible resources in
particular, and to a lesser extent for knowledge
and other intangible resources. Using
multivariate data analysis, we found that the
availability of physical resources such as
machinery and equipment, land and raw materials,
had a significant positive impact on business
performance. Being able to make use of spare
capacity of the physical assets belonging to the
farm business reduces the costs and the risks
associated with developing a new business, which
may be an important competitive advantage.
However, the study also reveals that resources
not only represent assets but may also represent
liabilities to the new business. Extensive use of
the network resources connected to the farm
business showed a significant negative impact on
performance. There seems to be a risk associated
with being stuck with the resources available
through the existing business, and not being able
to acquire new resources in the fields were the
existing business' resources are not applicable.
