Maryanne Doherty-Poirier is a professor of the
Department of Secondary Education and the
Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education. In
addition to her administrative work, Maryanne is
extensively involved in teaching at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of
career and technology studies and research
methodology.
Her experience prior to taking up this position
is varied she taught at the junior and senior
high levels in British Columbia and Alberta,
worked as a private research consultant, was
employed by Alberta Education, and lectured for
the Department of Human Ecology.

Her program of research focuses on developing,
implementing and evaluating educational programs
for behavioral change. She is currently
interested in exploring adolescent behavior,
especially the discrepancies among knowledge,
intentions and actions in the realm of
health-related behaviors.
She has published mainly in in the area of sexual
health and has authored a series of teacher
resources for teaching health in junior high
schools.

When I am writing I try to be as theoretical as
I can and to translate that theory into teaching
ideas.

I experience satisfaction putting my research
findings into meaningful words. But there is
always some fear that my words will be
misinterpreted.

My topic is sexuality education so I remain
ever sensitive to my readers. I choose my words
carefully so as to be understood within their
larger context of adolescent health and
well-being.

Writing is painful when I cannot find blocks of
time to writeit takes time for me to create the
space to write. Writing is painful when
thoughts dont flow as quickly as I would like.
It is joyful when something is published and my
research is being used in practice or cited by
others in their research.

My favorite places to write are my office in the
evening or at home
where I can lay out my research articles in an
open landscape for me to choose from
where they can remain until I am done.
