7Network of Service Roads at Los Angeles
International Airport
Service Roads do not cross Runways There are
designated areas to transition across Taxilanes
and Taxiways. Vehicles on service roads require
no communication with Air Traffic Control Tower.
Use caution in these areas due to unusual
service road configurations and vehicle/aircraft
traffic.
8Service Road/Taxiway Intersection
Vehicle encroaching on taxiway
MD-80 Wing-tip Clearance
B747-400 Wing-tip Clearance
- Stop for aircraft signs designate where vehicles
must yield to aircraft.
- All other service road signs such as Stop signs
and Stop for Landing Aircraft signs must be
followed accordingly.
9Runway Surface Markings
- Runway surface markings are white
10Runway Surface Markings
- The runway edge-line is an unbroken white stripe
indicating the edge of the runway and the edge of
the full-strength pavement.
11Runway Lighting
White Lights Remain Clear!
Runway lighting is white in color
Runway edge-lights identify the sides of the
runway
12Runway/Taxiway Intersection
Runway Guard Lights
Two Types Elevated and In-Pavement
Elevated Runway Guard Lights consist of two
alternating, flashing yellow lights
Caution Runway Ahead !!!
13Runway/Taxiway Intersection
- Holdbar Lines are located at every Runway -
Taxiway intersection
If you see this line you are in the wrong place,
turn and go back!
14 Taxiway Surface Markings
- Taxiway surface markings are yellow in color
Remain clear of taxiways!
15Taxiway Lighting
- Taxiway edge-lights are blue in color
16Taxiway Lighting
- In-pavement Taxiway centerline lights are green
in color
17Taxiway Lighting
- In-pavement taxiway centerline lights identify
the taxiway centerline during periods of darkness
or reduced visibility

25Safety Areas
Runway Safety Area
250 From Runway Centerline
- Runway safety areas are a defined surface
surrounding the runway prepared or suitable for
reducing the risk of damage to airplanes in the
event of an undershoot, overshoot, or excursion
from the runway.

30Runway Incursion
Definition
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines
a runway incursion as "Any occurrence at an
aerodrome (airport) involving the incorrect
presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on
the protected area of a surface designated for
the landing and take-off of aircraft."
Aftermath of a runway incursion
31Runway Access Procedures (Incursion Prevention)
- Targets indicate that a runway closure is in
progress.
- Targets prevent aircraft from landing or
departing on a closed runway.
- If you do not see a target, assume the runway is
active (open).
- Enter and exit the runway environment from the
east or west end (Not mid-field)
- Do not use a closed runway to bypass service
roads when transitioning across the airfield.

50Jet Engines ingest lots of air and anything else
that gets too close!

Or worse, it can cause catastrophic accidents
