Jephthah honored for his faith
  • (Hebrews 1132-34) And what more shall I say? I
do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak,
Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,
administered justice 34 whose weakness was
turned to strength and who became powerful in
    battle and routed foreign armies.

4
Why Jephthah likely did not actually kill his
daughter as a sacrifice.
  • Human sacrifice seems out of character for
    Jephthah.
  • Jephthah had to know human sacrifice was against
    Gods law.
  • There is no mention of outrage in Israel.
  • Later kings of Judah who did human sacrifice
    worshipped Molech.
  • This could be a vow of dedication to permanently
    serve at the tabernacle.
  • Her failure to marry is repeated, but there is no
    actual mention of her death.

5
Keep your promises to God!
  • (Ecclesiastes 54-7) When you make a vow to God,
do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure
in fools fulfill your vow. 5 It is better not
to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. 6
Why should God be angry at what you say and
destroy the work of your hands? 7 Therefore
    stand in awe of God.

Jephthah
  • God uses people in spite of their flawed
character or flawed backgrounds because Gods
purposes are not thwarted by mans failures.
  • God can use me in spite of my background or past.
  • My past is no excuse for future failures.
  • When God uses me, I cant assume its because Im
so godly, but only that God chose to use me in
    spite of my failures.
  • Gods purposes are more important than my selfish
    eagerness to get credit.
