What is Juvenile Diabetes?

• A problem of the pancreas
• In which the pancreas fails to make insulin
• Which creates excess glucose in the blood
• Resulting in problems of
• Kidneys
• Eyes
• Heart
• Nerves
• Teeth/gums

What causes Juvenile Diabetes?

• Genetic Predisposition
• Family Hx

• Autoimmune disorder
• The body destroys beta cells of the pancreas

What Symptoms to expect

• Extreme thirst
• Frequent urination
• Unexplained weight loss
• Slow healing sores
• Loss of feeling or tingling feet
• Blurred vision

What should a newly diagnosed patient expect?

• To learn how to manage blood glucose levels
• To learn how to give themselves (or their child)
  injections of insulin

• How to take their blood, to asses blood glucose
  levels
• What to expect if blood glucose levels are too
  high or low

TreatmentOptions

• The physician will determine the optimal
  treatment based on the patient
• Most patients opt to use a pump to minimize the
  pain of multiple injections
