Key MessageToothbrushing
  • Children should brush their teeth twice a day
    using toothpaste containing at least 1000ppm
    fluoride. They should spit the toothpaste out
    and should not rinse out with water.

  • Toothbrushing should begin as soon as the first
    tooth starts to come in.
  • Brush teeth twice a day especially last thing at
    night.
  • Toothbrush should have soft bristles and have a
    small head.
  • Use a mild tasting fluoride toothpaste.
  • The toothpaste given as part of the Childsmile
    Programme is ideal and can be used by the
    whole family.
  • Toothpaste should contain about 1000ppm (parts
    per million) fluoride.

  • Use a smear of toothpaste up to two years old and
    a pea size amount from two years old and upwards.
  • Encourage the child to empty their mouth (spit
    out) of toothpaste after brushing.
  • Do not rinse the mouth after brushing.
  • Replace the brush every three months or sooner if
    bristles are splayed.

The daily use of a fluoride toothpaste is a
highly effective method of delivering fluoride to
the tooth surface and has proved to be a major
benefit. The Scientific Basis of Oral Health
Education Good oral hygiene practice should be
established at an early stage in a childs life
and become an integral part of normal daily
hygiene.
