About the Author

• S.E. Hinton Susan Eloise Hinton. She tried to
  conceal her female identity so she would not
  alienate male readers.
• Born in Tulsa, OK in 1950 lived there most of
  her life.
• Began writing The Outsiders at age 15 it was
  published when she was 17.
• Received a D in her creative writing class while
  composing the book.
• Wrote about what she saw around her The
  Outsiders was inspired by the beating of one of
  her greaser friends.

• Looks at stereotypes and class distinctions
  amongst teens.
• Was an instant bestseller.
• This book began a major change in young adult
  literature. Rather than writing about perfect
  families and perfect lives, writers began
  addressing what happened in real teenage life.
• She went on to write That Was Then, This Is Now,
  Rumble Fish, and Tex.
