What is a Pathway?
  • A Pathway is the combination of subjects that you
    study starting from when you are 14 in Year 10 up
    to the age of 19 either in school, college or in
    a job with training.

  • GCSEs/Skillforce Sixth Form/College
    Work/University
  • GCSEs/College/Work Placement Sixth Form/College

SALLYS PATHWAY
  • Sally is studying 9 GCSEs at school and thinks
    that she will keep on studying after Year 11 as
    she is really interested in working with animals.
    She wants to wait for her results to make a final
    decision but she is researching what A Levels she
    would need to become a vet, and has looked at
    what is offered in the Sixth Form. She also has
    the option of animal nursing so she is looking at
    courses at the College of West Anglia and Easton
    College. She knows that she may be able to apply
    for an Education Maintenance Allowance ( up to
    30 per week) if she stays in learning after she
    is 16. If she does well when she takes her exams
    at 18 she may consider going to university to
    take a degree in veterinary medicine.

Davids Pathway
  • David has chosen to take 6 GCSEs and the
    Skillforce ( ASDAN Award) course. He is really
    unsure about what to do when he comes to the end
    of Year 11.He does know that employers around
    Methwold expect good qualifications and like to
    employ people who can solve problems and work
    well with other people. David thinks that another
    year at school may help so hes looking at
    courses, like the Skillforce Gold course that
    will help him be more employable. When hes done
    a year at Sixth Form he may decide to try for a
    job with training or he may go on to A levels.
    After that he has the option of further study at
    City College or CoWA or his study and experiences
    may make employers more likely to give him a job
    at a higher level than when he was 16.

Claires Pathway
  • Claire has decided that she can make a career in
    the construction industry so she is attending
    CoWA one day per week as well as taking GCSEs at
    school. She hopes Mrs Crook can arrange with
    Mansells for her to work there one day each week
    also. She knows that she has the option to
    continue at the college when she comes to the end
    of Year 11 so that she can gain a higher level of
    qualification. She wants to do well in her GCSEs
    as she knows employers will expect good grades.
    Her ambition is to eventually start her own
    company so she plans to make the most of the
    Enterprise opportunities in school.

SOME CHANGES
  • In September 2008 (when Year 8 starts Year 10) it
    may be possible to take a course called a
    Diploma.
  • For Year 9 the Diplomas will be available in
    September 2009 if you stay in learning after you
    are 16
  • These are the course that may be available
  • ICT
  • Health Social Care
  • Engineering
  • Creative Media
  • Construction the Built Environment

What Does This Mean?
  • You could have the opportunity to take a course
    that is made up of GCSEs other courses and the
    Diplomas
  • The diplomas will be offered to students of
    different abilities Levels 1, 2 and 3.
  • You can take a Diploma in years 10 11 and
    then continue to Level 3 after you are 16.
  • You will have to spend the equivalent of 4 6
    GCSEs worth of time on studying for a diploma.
  • You can study for some of the diplomas in school,
    some in college and some will be studied partly
    in school and partly in college.

HOW WILL THE NEW DIPLOMAS WORK?
  • Three levels up to advanced
  • Design is employer-led but are not intended as
    preparation for an occupation
  • The diplomas require young people to develop the
    broad skills required by potential employers

WILL THE PLAN REPLACE THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM?
  • No students will study existing subjects
    alongside the new elements
  • All 14 to16-year-olds will have a choice of
    studying a diploma alongside the core entitlement
  • The 16-19 options include A Levels and other
    courses as well as the diploma

  • 16-19 year-olds are entitled to
  • Study towards any one of the 14 diplomas
  • Functional English, Maths and ICT until Level 2
    is achieved

WHY MAKE CHANGES?
  • The Government wish 14 -19 education to be
    unified and the curriculum to
  • Motivate and be relevant to avoid students being
    turned off
  • Help students to develop knowledge, skills
    attributes needed to succeed in the future
  • Improve the quality of learning both general
    and vocational
  • Provide clear and flexible progression pathways
    with gradual steps to achievement
  • Have a stronger vocational education and greater
    employer engagement
  • Promote effective and equitable learner choice
    supported by good quality Information Advice
    Guidance
