Starting Microsoft Word
  • Double Click on the Microsoft Word icon on the
    desktop.
  • If there is no icon
  • Click on the Start Menu
  • Go to all programs
  • Click on Microsoft Office
  • Click on Microsoft Office Word 2003

Open an Existing Document
  • If document hasnt been started then go to next
    page
  • Go to File, Open
  • Locate your document
  • Click on Open to open the document

Set Margins
  • Go to File, Page Setup
  • In the top part of the box you can set the
    margins.
  • Make sure the top and bottom margins are set to
    1.
  • Set the right and left margins to 1 also.
  • Hit OK

Choose Font, Font Style, and Size
  • Go to Format, Font
  • Font
  • Times New Roman
  • Font Style
  • Regular
  • Size
  • 12
  • Then hit OK

Start a Title Page
  • Starting at the beginning of the paper hit the
    enter button 20 times.
  • Click the center justify button on the toolbar.
  • Type the title of your paper in all capital
    letters. Then hit enter.
  • Hit enter 20 more times.
  • Click the right justify button on the toolbar.

Start a Title Page
  • Type your name, press enter
  • Type your instructors name, press enter
  • Type the name of the course you are doing this
    paper for, press enter.
  • Type the date

Creating a Header and Footer
  • Choose View from the menu bar.
  • Select Header and Footer
  • Click in the dotted box area labeled Header
  • Click the Right justification button. (if you
    need assistance with this see Justifying Text
    portion of this documentation)
  • Type your last name with a space after it.
  • Select the page number button on the floating
    toolbar. (see screenshot)

Setting the Paragraph Spacing
  • Select entire body of your paper by clicking the
    left mouse button and dragging from the beginning
    of the body of your text to the end of your text.
    Be sure to stay in the left hand margin of your
    paper and drag straight down.
  • Once you have selected your text. Right click
    your mouse button in the blackened area of your
    text.

Setting the Paragraph Spacing
  • Choose the Paragraph option
  • Under the Indents and Spacing find the drop
    down box underneath the text that says, Line
    Spacing
  • Select Double from the drop down box. (see
    screenshot)

Block Quotation Formatting
  • Highlight any quote that is 4 lines or longer.
  • Caution Make sure that it is the only text that
    you have highlighted.
  • Drag the arrow keys on the ruler bar at the top
    of the document to the right 1. (See diagram)
