  • July 2006

2
WE ARE NOW IN THE MIDST OF ONE OF THEMOST
RAPID TRANSFORMATIVE MOMENTS IN ECONOMIC
HISTORY.
3
  • The global economy is in a seismic shift of
unprecedented proportions, with power shifting to
    Asia.

4
THE FIRST WAVE AN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY
  • Up until the 19th century agricultural economy
  • Lived on farms and villages
  • Performed activities
  • Meaning is in subject/person

5
THE SECOND WAVEFROM AGRICULTURE TO INDUSTRY
  • INDUSTRIALIZATION
  • URBANIZATION
  • IMMIGRATION
  • From ACTIVITY to JOB

6
URBANIZATION
  • ON OR ABOUT DECEMBER 1910,
  • HUMAN NATURE CHANGED.

  • -VIRGINIA WOLF, 1938

7
THE THIRD WAVEFROM INDUSTY TO INFORMATION
  • INDUSTRIALIZATION ? DIGITALIZATION
  • URBANIZATION ? GLOBALIZATION
  • IMMIGRATION ? WORLD WORKERS

8
ORGANIZATIONS
  • DOWNSIZED
  • FLATTENED
  • RESTRUCTURED
  • OUTSOURCED
  • LEARNING

9
THE THREE WAVES
  • WORK PERSON MEANING
  • ACTIVITIES CHARACTER RELIGION
  • JOBS PERSONALITY SCIENCE
  • ASSIGNMENTS/ IDENTITY LANGUAGE
  • SKILLS

10
  • EMPLOYMENT
  • NO LONGER DEPENDS ON MASTERING AN UNIFORM BODY
    OF KNOWLEDGE
  • EMPLOYABILITY
  • DEPENDS ON ABILITY TO LEARN AND THE SKILLS
    NEEDED TO DO THE TASKS

11
JOBS STARTED BY WORKERS AT AGE 33-38, 39 ENDED
IN LESS THAN A YEAR.70 ENDED IN FEWER THAN
FIVE YEARS
12
  • Superleadership as an idea emerged in the context
of business and broader economic situation, where
the development of the each persons ability to
maximize potential is important to the success of
the company. If people arent developing skills,
arent doing their job well, they can be fired.
  • In order to stay competitive, business has
realized that they have to develop the leadership
skills of all adults in the system.

13
Distributed Leadership
  • Model of public school leadership where all the
adults in the system participate in leadership
    functions and activities.
  • But. Pilots, passengers, hijackers (Trish Hatch)

14
  • Distributed leadership as an idea emerged in the
context of education, which is not a competitive
economic environment. Education jobs are not
being outsourced, and people are seldom fired.
Maximal development of each adult in the system
is not the goal of education in many schools.
  • Education has not figured out that every adult in
the system needs to be a leader in order to
    improve outcomes.
