• Nuclear characteristics same as E.coli trophs
• One to eight nuclei
• Cytoplasm may contain clear vacuoles
• Young cysts may contain chromatoid bodies with
  splintered ends

Entamoeba hartmanii

• Commensal intestinal ameba with almost identical
  morphology to E. histolytica except for size
• Trophozoites and cysts less than 10 µm
• Trophozoites do not ingest RBCs
• Cytoplasm may contain bacteria
• Progressive motility not seen on wet preparations

• Nuclear details identical to E. histolytica
• Chromatoid bars identical to E. histolytica
• Differentiation from E. histolytica requires
  well-calibrated ocular micrometer
