BI Hardware Renovation(in the Experimental
Areas of the SPS)
  • Main Activities of AB/BDI/EA
  • EA Renovation Program
  • Old Function-Oriented Hardware
  • New Equipment-Oriented Hardware
  • Industrial Control
  • Improvements for exploitation
  • East Area, AD, Isolde,
  • Conclusion

2
Main Activities of AB/BDI/EA (in the
Experimental Areas of the SPS)
  • Installation of BDI
  • Commissioning
  • Modification Notes
  • Detector Development
  • EA Renovation Program
  • Development of New Hardware
  • Industrial Control
  • Exploitation and Piquet Service

3
Renovation Background (1)
  • Most of the beam instrumentation in the
Experimental Areas of the SPS was developed 25
    years ago.
  • The electronics was implemented in functional
building blocks that made it easy to tryout new
    features.
  • Some twenty barracks regroups the hardware of 200
    detectors and 400 motor controls.
  • Many installations in the Experimental Areas are
not permanent but are changing every year.
  • Due to lack of money and manpower, only a small
fraction of the electronics have been upgraded
    during the LEP era.

4
Renovation Background (2)
  • The old function-oriented design requires a high
level of specialist knowledge, both for
    installation and for trouble-shooting.
  • Many electronic modules have now become obsolete.
  • Diagnostic tools are also getting obsolete due to
    change of technologies.
  • Similar detectors are often implemented in
different ways depending on the year of
    installation.
  • Time needed for maintenance goes up !
  • Available manpower goes down !

5
EA Renovation Program (1)
  • The Maintenance goes up, Manpower goes down
problem had to be dealt with.
  • The long-term maintenance load had to be eased.
  • Budget for an instrumentation hardware renovation
    was granted.
  • But a consolidation of the instrumentation
hardware alone was not enough to ease
    maintenance.
  • Other CERN services had to be involved as well.
  • EA Renovation Program Committee born in 2000.

6
EA Renovation Program (2)
EA Renovation
  • The EA Renovation Program Committee coordinates
  • Instrumentation developments with AB/BDI
  • Standardization of detector mechanics with ATB/EA
  • New control structure with CESAR in AB/CO
  • New installation database within AB/CO
  • Timing upgrade with AB/CO
  • Ethernet upgrade within SL/CO (now IT)
  • Standardization of vacuum control with AT/VAC
  • Upgrade of junction-crates with AB/PO
  • Interlock and access within TS/MA
  • Barrack surveillance within TS/CO

7
The Magic Mystery Tour
EA Renovation

16
Improvements for Exploitation
  • Easier maintenance of hardware
  • Thanks to more simple implementation
  • New Diagnostic tools with CESAR
  • To replace the Nodal Piquet Tree
  • New installation database
  • To document an equipment chain
  • Naming convention
  • To ease exchange of information
