1. INTRODUCTION
  • 1.1 The Internet Project
  • Ethiopia has joined the world of the Internet as
    of January 1st 1997
  • ETC has conducted a survey to assess the Internet
    market to determine the nature of connection that
    should be configured
  • ETC has introduced the service and there are
    2590 Internet users as of April 30, 2000.

  • Training of 15 Internet Group members on TCP/IP
    Architectural configuration
  • Configuration of the Internet node by Global
    One experts in Addis Ababa

2. THE EXPERIENCE OF OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES
  • There could be different phases (stages) for
    joining the Internet
  • Experience of other African countries has been
    taken
  • A system should not be designed so large catering
    to cover future demands beyond 2 to 3 years

9. MULTIPURPOSE TELECENTERS AND CYBER CAFE
SERVICES
  • The Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission
    and the British Council have implemented a pilot
    project
  • wolliso (114 Km)
  • Debre Brehane ( 130 Km )
  • ETC plans cyber café services in 8 selected areas
    in Addis Ababa Regional Offices

10. EXPANSION OF THE INTERNET PROJECT
  • MOU was signed on July 1998 between the Federal
    Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the
    UNDP_Africa
  • The cost is estimated to be USD 1,300,000
  • Three Phased approach
  • Upgrading the National gateway
  • Implementing Big and small PoPs in 8 cities of
    the National Regional states
  • Establishing Cyber Café in 8 Selected Areas of
    Addis Ababa NRS.

11. CONCLUSION
  • Regulatory issues on Internet, cyber café, and
    telecenters are under preparation by the
    Ethiopian Telecommunications Agency.
  • Reduction of tariff on Nov. 1,1997
  • Signing of contract agreement between ETC and
    RIPE NCC is underway
  • International Bandwidth upgrading
  • 256 Kbps - 512 Kbps (Nov.1998)
  • 512 Kbps -1 MB on process
