WHY NOW?
  • Placements can be difficult to obtain
  • Some firms need six months notice
  • Insurance information must be acquired, and a
    Health and Safety check has to be carried out by
    a company called Staffordshire Partnership
    which the school will contact once the placement
    has been agreed and insurance information is
    received. They require a minimum of 8 weeks
    notice to do a check. If a Health and Safety
    check is not carried out the placement will NOT
    be allowed.
  • Students need to be ready.

WHY DO STUDENTS HAVE TO DO WORK EXPERIENCE ?
  • Its exciting
  • To find out what its like to be at work
  • To enable them to develop their social and
    personal skills in a working environment
  • To get a taste of the kind of work environment
    they may be interested in.

TYPES OF PLACEMENTS
  • TYPE 1
  • The placements are on the list provided by Mrs
    Roden on the website from 18/09/08
  • Health and safety and insurance checks have
    already been done
  • Mrs Roden will contact the company on your
    childs behalf
  • Primary School Placements students cannot apply
    for a placement in a school they attended.

  • TYPE 2
  • These placements are listed on the website and
    are placements that the school has used in
    previous years. It must not be a type 1 placement
    or any school
  • Students will need to contact the company and
    print the documentation off the website to send
    to the company.
  • Health and safety and insurance checks may have
    already been done.

  • TYPE 3
  • Students find the placement.
  • Sources could be
  • Local papers
  • Telephone directory
  • Internet
  • It must not be a type 1 or 2 placement or any
    school
  • Students will need to contact the company and
    print the documentation off the website to send
    to the company.

    have to be organised

TYPE 1
  • If there is a Type 1 placement your child would
    like to apply for, they reserve it on the
    website. The application will automatically be
    sent to their Learning Tutor to confirm their
    suitability. If they have been successful with
    their application they will be informed as
    quickly as possible via the Kingsmead website.

TYPE 2/3
  • After checking on the website that it is not a
    Type 1.
  • Students either make a phone call, visit the
    company or write a letter of application. Only
    when they get a positive response should they
    register online and then download the forms from
    the website under the Type 2/3 heading. These
    forms need to be taken/sent to the placement to
    be completed by the company to confirm the
    placement. The completed forms must be handed in
    to Mrs Roden.

ROUTE THROUGH TYPE 1/2/3
  • Parental Consent Letter returned
  • Students apply online (Type1) or by
    phone/visit/letter (Type2/3)
  • Students can only register for one placement at a
    time
  • Type 2/3 only - Students take/send the company
    the relevant forms from the website including
    possibly a letter of application and a stamped
    addressed envelope. Completed Forms are returned
    to Mrs Roden
  • Placement confirmed
  • Deadline for placements is 11/12/09
  • March Students complete Personal Details Form
    (To be returned to Learning Tutors when
    completed). Student should contact the company
    and if required, students should arrange an
    interview.
  • April Health and safety prepared and diary
    completed.

EXPECTATIONS
  • Student behaviour determines work placements on
    offer next year
  • Work experience is not optional

Trouble shooting
  • Type 1 they register then change their minds.
    The website will not allow them pick another
    place.
  • Type 2/3 they register before they have asked
    the company and the company says no.
  • Type 2/3 they register but forget to print off
    the paper work.

    about employment and themselves
  • Book early to avoid disappointment
  • Use the information booklets to guide them
    through the process

  • Some departments set interim deadlines for parts
    of the work.
  • Some done in Year 10, some in Year 11.

  • Teachers are also working to a deadline.
  • Mark the work and moderate within the school to
    ensure that all are interpreting the criteria in
    the same way.
  • Send some or all of the work to exam board.

    in Year 10 and follow this with an appropriate
    course in Year 11
