Factors Related To Hunting and Fishing
Participation Among The Nations Youth
  • The future of hunting and fishing in the United
States ultimately depends upon the commitment of
future generations to these traditional fish and
    wildlife activities.

Research clearly indicates that active
participation in hunting and fishing as an adult
is directly related to active participation as a
youth.
Conducted by Responsive Management, 2003, for US

How do we stop the slide?
  • Recruit new membership
  • From the bottom up
  • With a grass roots program
  • That teaches our youth how to fly fish

National FlyFishing in Schools Program (NFFSP)
is a dba of The FlyFishing Education
Foundation (FFEF) a non-profit, 501 (C) (3)

FlyFishing in SchoolsThe National FlyFishing
in Schools ProgramNFFSP
  • An in school program
  • Grades 6-12
  • Middle Schools High Schools
  • Taught by PE teachers
  • Using a curriculum written by The School of
FlyFishing the 2008 National Teacher of the year

12
Following the leader
  • FlyFishing in Schools is patterned after the
proven successful Archery in Schools Program
    (NASP)
  • Their management has been instrumental in the
    evolution of this program
  • We are not reinventing the wheel

13
Results speak for themselves
  • Currently (2002 2008)
  • 5,000 schools are using the archery program
  • 15,000 certified school teachers teach youth
  • 4,500,000 youth in grades 4-12 have been taught
to safely shoot a bow and arrow in their school
    gymnasiums

14
We intend to do the same
  • Only
  • Students will use a fly rod
  • During regular school hours
  • In their school gymnasium
  • Learning how to flycast
  • Using a unique target system
  • From their PE teacher

15
In addition they will study
  • How to tie knots used in fly fishing
  • Fly fishing equipment
  • Fresh saltwater fish species
  • Aquatic habitat
  • Aquatic entomology
  • Resource stewardship conservation

16
If a youngster can be taught to shoot a bow
arrow in his/her school gym . . .
  • THEY CAN SURE AS THE DICKENS LEARN TO CAST A FLY
    ROD

17
How does FlyFishing in Schools work?
  • Partners with each state fish wildlife
agencyWho, with a vested interest in improving
license sales, etc., act as the clearing house
    for the program
  • And with the fly fishing industry who support the
    program
  • With financial and/or payment in kind
    contributions to the
  • FlyFishing Education Foundation
  • Thus enabling individual schools to seekfunding
for the FlyFishing in Schools Program from the
    FlyFishing Education Foundation
  • And with each state education agencywho are
thirsty for outdoor related programs that get
    kids off the couch
