Title: Welcome to the Faculty of Education, CUHK
1Welcome to the Faculty of Education, CUHK
2Using WebQuest and Concept Map Tool to Facilitate
Students Self-learning
All the ideas about WebQuest in this presentation
are based on Dr Bernie Dodges work
3What EMB wants the school to do in curriculum
reform?
4The answer
Exploring Activity
5WebQuest????
- Learning from the Internet Information to
knowledge through inquiry
6The WebQuest(ions)
- An inquiry-oriented activity
- Teachers choose Web resources for students to use
- Support higher order thinking skills analysis,
evaluation and synthesis of information - Scaffolding (to be elaborated in next session)
- Material is learned better when it is presented
in scaffolding forms - Situated Cognition
- Learning is optimized when material is presented
in context (contextual learning)
7The WebQuest Model
- Introduction
- sets the stage and provides some background
information. - An instructional set that stimulates prior
knowledge and prepares students for new learning. - Task
- The challenge or conflict to be addressed in the
WebQuest activities
8The WebQuest Model
- Process
- students go through in accomplishing the task
- Collaborative teams are formed
- Specific guided activities
- Information sources
- information needed to complete the task
- Web-based
- Print or video resources
9The WebQuest Model
- Evaluation
- Criteria in rubrics presented to students to
supply information for various levels of learning
targets - Conclusion
- The closure to the quest
- Reminds the learners about what they've learned
- Teachers page
- information to help other teachers to implement
the Webquest, including target learners,
curriculum contents, notes for teaching the unit,
and, in some cases, examples of student work.

WebQuest

and Learning - http//www.uwstout.edu/soe/profdev/conceptmap/50us

16What is concept map ?
- Concept map is a tool for organising and
representing knowledge/information in graphs - This technique was developed by Prof. Joseph D.
Novak at Cornell University in the 1960s - This work was based on the theories of David
Ausubel, who stressed the importance of prior
knowledge in being able to learn about new
concepts (Learning hierarchy)
17What is concept map ?
- Concept Map is the process of identifying
important concepts, arranging those concepts
spatially, identifying relationships among those
concepts, and labeling the nature of the semantic
relationships among those concepts. - Learning is part of the process of assimilating
new concepts into existing cognitive structures
18The components of concept map
- Knowledge graphs consist of
- nodes (points/vertices)
- links (arcs/edges).
- Nodes, by enclosing words, represent concepts or
ideas - Links, by words and lines, represent the
relations between concepts - Concept map whose links are attached no words is
called idea map

20Hands-on Activity
21Developing a concept map
The steps below are based on the
reference Jonassen, David H., Beissner,
Katherine, Yacci, Michael. (1993). Structural
knowledge Techniques for representing,
conveying, and acquiring structural knowledge.
Lawrence Hillsdale, NJ Erlbaum Publishers.
22Steps
- Identify a set of important concepts by words in
a task - At the top of the map, use a circle to enclose
the most important concept (word) - Rank all other concepts (words) in order of
importance use the same shapes of enclosure to
enclose all concepts of the same rank - Connect lines and add link words of all the
original important concepts - Re-evaluate this temporary product by considering
the relevance of nodes and links - Re-connect lines, add or drop important
concepts if necessary
23A demo of the steps of development
24Group assignments for discussion in second session
- Select a topic in a KLA
- Use the Inspiration to design the tasks of a
WebQuest
Example
25How to submit your assignments?
- Send with file attachment to your instructors
e-mail address - In the Inspiration file, there is a text box with
your name - The file name is the event code (such as AA, ..
AD) and your name. For example, AA_chantaiman.isf - Deadline 72 hours before the second session
26End of Session 1
- Thank you !
- See all of you in Session 2
