I. VAN RIPERS TRADITIONAL APPROACH

• A. Ear Training
• 1. Identification (the client discriminates the
  target sound in isolation among other sounds)
• 2. Isolation (the client indicates when she
  hears the SLPs correct or incorrect production
  of the sound

• 3. Focused stimulation (the SLP bombards the
  client with productions of the target sound)
• 4. Discrimination (similar to isolation the
  client indicates the SLPs correct/incorrect
  productions in increasingly complex contexts
  such as phrases, words, sentences, and

  differences in sounds mean differences in word
  meanings

Therapy steps

• 1. Perceptual levelpick up the picture of tea
• 2. Have the client produce each target word by
  itself
• 3. Say to the client tell me which picture to
  pick up

• 4. Use carrier phrases. point to a picture and
  say

• I have a___
• 5. Continue carrier phrases incorporating both
  pictures (Say Here is a tea and a key ).
