WHAT IS DIP MOLDING?
  • A thermal process in which a heated mold is
    dipped into liquid plastisol which hardens to
    form an exact replica of the mold

PLASTISOL
  • Plasisol is a vinyl compound that is liquid at
    room temperature and will keep for years.
  • When heated it fuses into ordinary vinyl never to
    liquefy again.
  • Plastisol is non thermal plastic which means once
    it has hardened it can not be melted.
  • It is available in an unlimited amount of colors.

  • Medical equipment such as catheters
  • Caps and sleeves for parts
  • Dip molding is the standard for tool handles

SAFETY!
  • Dip molding is a very safe procedure with only
    one major issue.it involves VERY HOT tools that
    can seriously burn you! Make sure you are
    wearing gloves and using pliers to move the hot
    forms.
  • Even though the plastisol looks good you
    shouldnt eat it.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

PROCEDURE
  • Pre heat the over to 350-400
  • Hang the form in the oven for 10 minutes
  • Wearing gloves and using pliers, take the form
    out of the oven
  • Slowly dip the form into the plastisol (video on
    next page)
  • The longer you leave the mold in the plastisol
    the thicker the finished form will be

PROCEDURE CONTINUED
  • Pull the form out slowly and evenly, put it back
    in the oven to cure
  • Put the form in cold water to cool it off
  • Remove the plastic from the form

FINAL WORDS
  • Dip molding is a very tedious process, it can
    take a couple of tries before you get it right.
  • Keep in mind that the numbers given in the
    procedure are only guidelines, thicker molds may
    need more time while thinner ones may need less
    time, some tinkering may be necessary to get it
    right.
  • Take your time and dont get frustrated. If any
    help is needed dont hesitate to ask the
    instructor.
